    you have to get the engine manuals from Mercruiser. http://publications.brunswick.com/ regarding your motor, 4600-4800 RPM. However I would not have a problem turning that motor 5000 RPM

    you still need a drive. the 2.3 liter has the wrong gearing for a 5.0. plus you need the correct transom assembly. you need to change everything from the front pulley to the propeller

    yes, however you would need a complete 5.0, and appropriate drive to replace everything pulley to prop. the 2.3 was used almost 40 years ago. is the boat structurally sound enough for a repower?

    popping is running lean. its called a lean sneeze. did you remove the carburetor and go thru it? sounds like the accelerator pump circuit is clogged.

    I dont think its the head gaskets. A leakdown test will tell we still do not know if this is a vortec motor or a non-vortec motor.

    you take it to a parts store that tests alternators most no longer do. or you take it to your local alternator / starter shop and have them test it.
