My last custom cover was made from a material that looked like convert able car top material. After 10 years, still looked like new, never had to recover with waterproof stuff. Also has to fit right.......never leaked a drop !

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

The ones I owned were earlier models with the old VRO system, I am sure the newer models have improved that system

    1988 Johnson 70hp inspection

Yep...retired tool maker here, did a few small motors on our Bridgeport mill with a boring head over my 50 years. Once setup, it was not that hard.

    1988 Johnson 70hp inspection

You will pay much more for a good one around here....very popular size, so if the motor is in really good shape...double that price easily. However ...be aware...many really nice motors just look good, but have other so called "minor" issues !! I always say, if the issue is minor, fix it...

    Solar charging batteries

I was told that these batteries need more than a trickle charger when the battery is low ( below 50%). Once the battery is charged a small or trickle charger will keep it full. My mfgr recomended a 20 amp 14.6 volt charger for my LifePo4 140 ah battery and it works great and it is quick...

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

In my area we have quite a few marine repair shops, so when I first bought a used motor with VRO system, I talked to a number if mechanics about the system. Most all recomended switching to the premix method do to questionable reliability of the VRO. A few years back I picked up a Mercury...

    Solar charging batteries

LifePo4 batteries like a bigger amp charger over a trickle charger to fill them up. Trickle charge is ok once filled, but not for long term. Lipo batteries require a storage charge ( about 50%) for longest life. Keeping one at full charge over time will shorten the life. When folks start...

    Rebuilt floor question.

Numerous posts and warnings about how big a job rebuilding fiberglass hulls can be.....when someone gets the itch to do so, they always think it won't be that bad ! I don't have enough fingers to count the people that ended up sorry for tackling their project after time and costs exceeded their...

    Rebuilt floor question.

Is your motor deep enough ? Should not be doing that unless your hull is twisted. Your motor would need to be out of plumb a noticeable amount. And pics from the rear out of the water ?

Thought about that stuff myself, but only find it in black, which would be to hot in summer.

Converting Roller trailer to bunks for my Starcraft 161

In my opinuon, 2x6 would be plenty, if your worried add a stiffener like I mentioned previously by adding a 2x3 on edge under the 2x6. You will need carpet or other surface on bunks for the hull to slide on. A 2x8 would create to much friction as a bunk board.

Converting Roller trailer to bunks for my Starcraft 161

Your boat is not that heavy, so the span would not be a big concern for me. However if your concerned, add a piece if angle iron/ angle aluminum in between then add your 2x6 or other size lumber to make your bunk. I have saw many trailers with a T shaped bunk, a 2x3 on edge bolted to a 2x4, or...

Will boat for this style trailer?

Your boat is light weight, most weight is closer to center, being just inside looks good to me as it will help center when loading. Adding side guides will make it even easier !
