Trailer bunk popped off during loading

Is the 'side bunk' a guide that helps center the boat on the trailer, or is it an actual bunk that the boat rests on? I'd use either pressure treated lumber (same dimensions as what you currently have) or Western red cedar. You can either put the boat on stand (a bit of a pain, but not...

Water in Bilge? Where can it come from.......

I think intentionally filling a boat with water, particularly a fiberglass boat, is a horrible idea. Not only are you failing to recreate the conditions under which the boat is leaking, you are potentially introducing water to all sorts of places that would be better staying dry. I would never...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

I reused my tyvek suits until they got holes in them. Before taking off the PPE, I'd use shop air to blow off as much fiberglass dust as I could. Once the tyvek gets a hole in it, it's done. I started wearing knee pads outside the tyvek suit, because (other than rips) the knees were the first...

Trailer bunk popped off during loading

Did the bunk pop off because the wood rotted and couldn't hold the bolt, or did the bolt or bracket fail? When I refurbed my '96 trailer, I reused the bunk boards, bought exterior carpet for the bunks, and used monel staples and stainless steel fasteners.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Full tyvek suit, with nitrile gloves taped to the sleeves, and leather gloves on top, goes a long way to prevent the itchies.

    Trailer brake system opinions

I have never cared much for surge brakes. I installed electrics on my trailer and it was quite easy. that assumes your trailer already has the backing plate, which mine did. I purchased a kit that included the brakes, new drums, wiring, breakaway box and plug. if you get the Dexter never adjust...

    Bolster seat

Same here. I almost never am sitting low enough to see through the windshield. I boat on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers quite a bit, and there is enough debris that it helps to be up a little bit higher to see submerged logs and such.

    Convertible Top

My boat came with a convertible top. I set it up once and have never used it again. I am a fair weather boater, so a bimini is much more useful for the type of boating I do.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

The demo absolutely is the worst part! Hang in there! Once you're done tearing out stuff and grinding fiberglass, it gets much easier (and a lot more fun).

    Bolster seat

That's what I did. I just bought a taller pedestal that is adjustable.

1989 Sunbird SPL 150, standing water in ski storage compartment

Are those nails protruding down from the deck on the right side of the picture? I'm wondering of someone did a half-a$$ed re-deck over a rotted deck. Given the look of the stringers and bulkheads, I fear you have some bad wood under that fiberglass.

    Convertible Top

That's odd. I've never heard of those being referred to as Navy tops. Every reference to them I've ever seen is as a convertible top.

    Gas tank access panel

When I restored my boat, I decided to fiberglass over the tank panel, leaving only a circular access port to get at the sender. I decided if I have problems sufficient to remove the tank, I've got bigger worries than cutting through the floor. If I do have to cutout the tank panel, I'll just...

First boat is it worth it?

Did the owner say why a 30 year old boat only has 65 hours on it? That's pretty unusual, unless the engine was replaced. I'd be very hesitant about sending anyone money - even a deposit - for a boat I have not seen or touched. It would be very easy to pull pictures of someone else's boat and...

Transferring fuel from truck to garage to dock to boats (PITB)

I'd be concerned about a build up of static electricity from running gas through a long hose. It seems like a pain, but the 5 gallon cans are probably safer. We run a boat for skiing/tubing on a lake in Canada without a fuel dock, so I feel your pain. I also considered a fuel caddy but the...

    Keel Guard Question

Absolutely it will help. If you want, you can buy a small can of gelcoat and cover the exposed fiberglass before applying the keel guard.

    Keel Guard Question

The longer, the better. Mine extends up well past the waterline, too.
