Exhaust Manifold and Water in Oil

Water leaks from the crack in water jacket into the exhaust ports down into cylinders where exhaust valves are open when engine stops. fills cylinder and leaks past the rings into the oil.

    Boat age vs financing.

No boat you will own will ever be 100% what you want, they all have some compromises. Personally I would just save up some money and buy when you have funds. Its a personal choice, from my perspective no sense borrowing money on an older boat that you can only use 4-5 months out of the year...

    Boat age vs financing.

As mentioned talk to a lender and look at it a couple different ways. One of my co workers could not get financing for a older car purchase (I think its more than 10 years old). He took a personal loan and is paying a ridiculous interest rate. Would think you are better off doing a Heloc or...

    Cracked intake manifold

I would pressure test the cooling system if you can make block off plates for the water cross over in intake. See if heads and block are not leaking before buying a new intake. Assumption would be that it wasnt properly winterized

    Correcting potential bad gear ratio

yes drop 2" of pitch should put you at the same place. I did a repower where I went the other way- swapped a 4.3 for a 5.0. Kept the 1.81 V6 drive ratio vs getting a 1.62 drive and went from 19" to 21" pitch. Works great

    Cam for 96 5.7

Those two sources and Powell machine found that heat treating isn't the issue - its that no one knows how to properly machine a flat cam and lifters anymore as no one is making them for OEMs only rollers. Lifters dont rotate and you can put what ever oil, valve springs , etc into breaking and it...

    Cam for 96 5.7

I was talking about a bunch of roller failures. The flat tappet issues seem to be more from improper machining- no taper on lobe and no convex to base of lifter than break in or oil issues. UTG and M<uscle car solutions did some good videos on how to measure these prior to flat cam install...

    Cam for 96 5.7

Yeah I know that but this guy doesn't have 30 years of putting motors together, which is often learned the hard way, hence have the machinist do the combo so the OP doesn't miss something If he wants worry free stock performance and a simple build stay with stock components. Melling is quality...

    Cam for 96 5.7

No you have a 85 and up small block Chevy sure fireway is to get casting number of bellhousing area of block and go off that this is probably the mildest kit they have for cam lifter and chain . May require valve springs and machine ping of spring pocket and retainer to seal clearance but talk...

    Cam for 96 5.7

Look on summit racing for sbc roller lifters. That’s where I would see what they cost. they would likely offer two style one for block originally set up for flat cams, one for originally set up for rollers. Or call their tech department to make sure what fits your engine

    Cam for 96 5.7

If you can get a good used truck cam and roller lifters for a reasonable price Do so. Roller cam and lifters are not cheap that’s why the rebuilder used flat tappet . anything with mercruiser label will be 2 x what it should cost. Not sure if comp cams can recommend a marine stock replacement...

    Thunderbolt 5 Base Timing Issues

there was no knock sensor on TB4 and I don't think any of the aftermarket marine systems use knock sensors. check your total advance if that is correct don't worry about the base timing for the moment as your issue of low power will be else where. If its low would try to disconnect the knock...

    Thunderbolt 5 Base Timing Issues

to eliminate the alarm while working through just disconnect the temp switch and oil pressure switch. They don't have anything to do with timing or base mode

    Thunderbolt 5 Base Timing Issues

Double check that you are grounding the purple white wire before starting engine? I think this is correct but I would need to double check a factory merc manual -https://www.justanswer.com/boat/9vkpv-set-timing-5-7-mercruiser-thunderbolt.html another way around it is even with an issue going...

    Manual fuel pump restrictions?

Are you having an issue with it and is it the factory set up ? Although it sounds a little longer and higher. My set up is about 4 ft horizontal and maybe 18" vertical maybe 24" if you count to bottom of tank. This is with an electric pump - no idea if suction lift of pump is different than...

    1977 Mercrusier 305 Chirping noise

yes if it is coming from the rear of engine may want to pull the drive and do the same . The v belt pulleys can get rust on them as well. Look at those while you are inspecting the circ pump
