    There is normal fore/aft play in shaft that I think gets taken up when it locks in gear. Remove prop lock in gear and see what happens I think it’s normal just need to check clearance when changing props

    Check everything is still tight. Not uncommon to have to trim the trim tab with different props nothing a grinder can clearance.

    Do you have correct annodes for salt water and is there shore power on your boat or nearby boats. Likely some stray current in the water. on my mercruiser i found better performance with oem merc annodes vs aftermarket. They lasted longer and i had less drive corrosion .

    I dont think the boat is new , i think the engine or carb is (Quicksilver…). Pretty sure by 2015 at latest all new boat carbed motors were gone. You could however buy new or reman carbed engines

    Yep was 1.98 on older drives, at some point they changed the tooth count/gear design so all ratios changed slightly 1.98=>1.94, V6 went from 1.84=>1.81 … etc

    Probably the vent for the fuel tank. My old boat had a separate vent line going to side of hull by conssole. does look in bad shape corrosion wise

    1997 mercruiser 4.3 starts right up, runs for about 30 seconds, idles down and dies repeatedly. Oil gauge doesn't peg at all. No oil pressure alarm.

    Jumper around the oil pressure switch that supplies power to fuel pump and test it.fuel pump is fed power off starter during cranking, then off ignition circuit via oil pressure switch when in run. Seems like fuel bowl is getting filled during cranking then runs til bowl is empty. verify oil...

    pressure test it with a radiator type tester if u loose a qt in 15 min its going somewhere
