Dont think you are missing anything thrust washer on the drive will have a-ridge that fits in the lip inside the prop.yiu may have to knock the thrust washer off your old drive , it worked last year so must have had all the pieces there. i also have a hub like that is bell shaped

    Mercarb TKS Replacement Carburetor Identification

If it is for that application it should work just fine. You need to wire up a 12 v supply off the purple ignition circut . I thin this is the same one that supplies 12 v power to the fuel pump and ignition when the key is in run position . Double check where the fuel inlet is some are on the...

    Fired up today...

I think in general the 4.3s take less advance than the v8s vortec and pre vortec. I think the vortec 4.3 that i pulled out of my boat was like 8 initial 24 total.

    Fired up today...

and Im still going to keep pestering you until you check it ... seriously by 5 degrees i assume you mean inital timing? I don't recall which engine/ ignition you have, but would assume it should be either 8 or 10 degrees. Any less initial timing will reduce total advance at higher rpm 3-5...

You need the wiring harness and ecu, ignition module on carbed motors. The engine needs ti be a complete bobtail regardless of cofniguration ( carb, tbi, or mpi) not just a long block.the ad the op showed looks to have a wiring harnes etc so should be relatively easy to run.

Replacement motor going in ,need opinions

Good to hear, the fuel pump should be handled within the existing wiring harness so i was confused by the mechanics comment. Hopefully it work$$ out Ok.

Yes pretty easy to run out of the boat, if it runs and has good compression its worth more. if not pay less. Bottom line its a 40 year old engine probably not in great demand. Says it needs a tune up only... if that cant be demonstrated its only a core....

    1983 Mercruiser Sterndrive - R

As mentioned clean it out then pressure test to find leaks. Given the age of the drive i would suspect it is due for a complete seal replacement. Given moisture intrusion you want to check bearings fir signs if corrosion and wear

165 in the add will be a bolt in replacement. Best to run it on the ground if possible. confusingly merc also had a 3.7 l 4 cylinder 165 hp as well.

    out drive gear lube

It will just come out the reservoir, not the same situation as overfilling oil in an engine crabkcase.

    out drive gear lube

It should completely drain the reservoir out the bottom plug. If it really didnt drain there is probably some debris in there or in the hose back to the outdrive. when i refill just pump from the bottom up until you see lube coming up in the bottle. At this point i would let it idle on the muffs...

    Starfire

This is good advice if you enjoy doing some work on it go for it at price mentioned. If you really like the boat long term consider repowering it with the engine and outdrive from a newer parts boat. Would be an easy swap (as far as swaps go) to put in a 5.7 merc with an alpha outdrive.

    OEM or Aftermarket

Bellows and water pump impellers general consensus is oem is better. On my old boat alpha one gen one, the merc impellers lasted twice as long as the sierra ones

Generally I’d use dot3 for an existing system it may say in the manufacturers requirements or on the master cylinder in the coupler

    1998 3.0 limited RPM

The mph makes sense for thats size boat, id expect 38 mph or so. Id cross check the tach with a shop tach as they sometimes go bad. Agree with bondo if it is accurate go down to 17” pitch. I would think you could swing a 19” pitch on that set up up to 4400-4600.

    Engine struggles to turn over

If you take the spark plugs out you should be able to turn the engine by hand at the balancer pulley. If this turns easily and it wont turn over correct the elecrical issues wether they are battery cable or starter related. if you cant turn it easily I would pull the drive and see if it frees up

    Engine struggles to turn over

I would measure the fuel pressure before replacing the pump. Since it starts on starting fluid the timing must be reasonably close. If you replaced the cables go back and recheck they are tight. I assume the battery is in good conditon? if you still cant get it to turn over may want to look at...
