    pull the elbow use a pliers to pull the thermostat scrape the gasket material use a new thermostat (it will hold itself just fine) install gasket and elbow

    dieseling will kill your motor. that last gasp as the motor stops is it running backwards sucking in water from the exhaust. look at your fuel quality and your ignition timing. if you have points, service them.

    does your friend boat in salt water? if fresh water, did your friend do his own winterizing? the fact that the motor got hot is a separate issue from the exhaust

    do you have a pipe die set? that is what i would do, start the die, cut about 2 new threads, cut off the excess length above the die, and back the die off. just be advised, your not looking at a cheap die, you will need a quality die. one that does not say "made in china"

    if the block cracked, your heads most likely cracked. would have to have have heads tested.

    the engine will rev in neutral running on only 2 cylinders. that means nothing. as Scott stated, when an engine is under load, it needs fuel. my guess your carb is plugged or your anti-siphon valve is stuck.

    could be a fender washer from bolting in an engine mount if it is thru-bolt vs lag bolt. however the washer looks too fresh to have lived in the bilge for a while.

    if you pull the line from the PS cooler to the raw water pump and nothing comes out, look for plastic debris in the oil cooler

    Merc borrowed from the GM inliner motors. May want to check to see if the lifter cover gasket is same from a 1962 chevy 153 or. Get one from a 196/230/250 and cut down

    About 25 million 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder inline motors built from about 1930 to the 1990s had lifter covers like the 470. Nearly all only have only 4 fasteners

    What color are the motors? Blue would be crusader, red will be volvo, black will ve mercruiser, charcoal will be OMC
