    No you would not see fuel leakage from the bowl !-----The fuel in the float bowl needs atmospheric pressure in order for the carburetor to work.----If there is a path that pulls air from the float bowl the carburetor may not function as designed !

    Well I would seriously think of getting rid of that vintage OPTIMAX.------I do not believe that flavour of 2 stroke is well supported by factory.----You might get the best value on resale / trade in now.-----Don't be shocked at what a dealer might allow on a trade !

    When spark jumps a gap of 5/16" then you have " good spark " -----Or I would use a ----MERC-O-TRONIC ----Magneto analyzer to test coils and condensers.------All elegantly simple.----I am not there to see , hear or feel your motor.------Posting specific information only help you !

    BRP stopped making the big E-tecs and E-tec G2 motors for now.-----They are still providing parts for Evinrudes.-----In fact many parts for older Evinrudes are easier to get than many newer motors , all brand names !

    ???----" deadrise " refers to the angle of the V in the hull.----Not transom height.----Just use ---google ---to learn what deadrise refers to !

    1981 Evinrude 35 hp - Shifter detent.

    The parts shown in the picture in post #1 are for the shift interlock. and the neutral start switch.-----It is possible that motor was shifted at too high an RPM without that interlock..-----The neutral shift detent is the spring and 2 balls on the propshaft.----Removal of those interlock items...

    It is not uncommon for a coil to burn through and short out to the magneto plate.----You would have to remove the coil and look on the bottom of the coil.-----But test as follows.----Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" on both leads ?

    The powerheads are the same HP !!-----One is rated 60 HP at the prop.-----Well it might be 62 .5 but they have to pick a nice number for marketing.

    Checked carburetor float bowls ?----They are known to warp.-----Replace gasket on vapor separator.

    Pull the port side head off.-----Likely you will find broken piston rings.-----The fact is that everyone of the crossflow engines will suffer that fate.
