    "coated" gaskets

Hello all, I just replaced the exhaust cover gaskets on my 1973 7.5. The factory gaskets are coated with a plastic like coating. I replaced the gaskets, torqued the cover back on and started the motor. Water was everywhere! What is the deal with these gaskets? How the heck are they supposed to...

    Can I convert 1973 7.5 to a 9.8?

According to my shop manual the only difference between a 1973 7.5 HP and 9.8 HP is the type of carb they have. Breaking that down further the difference I see is the main jet size. It's .035 for the 7.5 and .047 for the 9.8. Can I convert it to a 9.8 simply by changing the jet to a .047...

    Propeller i.d.

The propeller on my 1973 7.5 hp is stamped with 7P A1. Can anyone tell me what it means? I am looking for a spare prop and want to make sure I get the right one. I have seen 8 3/8 x 8, 9 x 9, and 9 x 10 for this motor. What do I need? Thanks, HD

7.5 Merc reverse lock engages in neutral

Gents, I just finished replacing the reverse lock rod retainer clip on my 7.5 Merc. In forward gear it releases so the motor will tilt and engages in reverse as it should but it also engages in neutral. Is it normal for the reverse lock to engage in neutral not allowing the motor to tilt...

    Fuel leak

7.5 Merc circa 1973. It runs like a dream but there is a slight fuel leak from the carb somewhere. All the gaskets look great. I tightened up the screws on the fuel pump and bowl. I have new gaskets on order but I really don't think it needs them. I replaced the short fuel line too. Any idea...

Sea Foam treatment in a test tank?

Hi Gents, I want to run a tank of gas with sea Foam through my recently acquired Merc 7.5 after I get all the little problems fixed on it. Is it o.k. to run it in a tank for a long period to clean it with Sea Foam? I'd like to get it done before fishing season starts in the spring. I figured I...

    Propeller "free wheels". Normal?

I noticed on my 7.5 Merc that when in forward gear the prop will "free wheel" but in reverse it does not. Is this normal? I assume it is to reduce drag when you let off the throttle? I have a Johnson 4.5 that does not do it. Thanks, HD

    Clamp Bracket Question

Greetings Gents, I have a 7.5 HP Merc SN 3730520 with a bent clamp screw. It's proving to be very hard to find some parts for it. My question is how does the clamp screw washer attach to the screw on some models? Mine appears to have a screw of sorts holding the washer to the thumb screw...

    Bent bracket screw

I need some expert advice. My 7.5 Merc has a bent mounting bracket screw. Is there any way to straighten it? I don't want to crack the aluminum bracket trying to bend the screw back and I don't know how to remove it to work on by itself. Thanks, HD

    Water seeping around plugs

Hey Gents, I'm breathing new life into an old 177? 7.5 HP Merc. I just replaced the impeller and got her pumping water again. Now I see water seeping out around the plugs. I Guess it's time for a new gasket. Otherwise she runs like a charm. I guess it's normal to find one little thing after...

    Prop nut?

I have an old 7.5 HP, a 1973 I believe. I am in the process of rehabing it. The prop nut is unlike any I have seen before. It's aluminum and has a red cap integrated into it which appears to act to lock it in place as well as keep junk out of the threads. The red cap is cracked. Is it o.k. to...

Questions on an old 7.5 Merc

Greetings Gents, I just got my hands on a old Merc 7.5 that's in great shape. I don't know if it runs yet which leads to my questions. There are no plugs in it. What I can find says it takes NGK BUHW2 plugs which cross to Champ L78V. Looking at the Champ numbering system it looks like L77JC4's...

She runs. Thanks for the help!

To all who helped me with my 4.5 Johnson that siezed up...Thank you! She was taking water into the cylinder after siezing up. I replaced the side plate gasket. I worked the head on some fine sandpaper to clean/true up the surface and replaced the head gasket. Compression seemed low at around 60...

.040 plug gap seems a bit much

I was looking at my Johnson repair manual and it says to gap the plugs for my 4.5 hp at .040 using a Champ L77JC4. That seems like a huge gap for such a cool plug. Opinions from the experts please. Thanks.

    Low compression?

Hey all, I have a 4.5 Johnson that siezed up. After it cooled it freed up no problem. However, I found water and mud in the cylinders so I replaced the head gasket and side plate gasket. The pistons and cylinders looked good except for a couple spots of mild scoring from the overheating/siezing...

1983 Johnson 4.5 head bolt torque

Greetings all, My first post here. I've found a lot of very useful information on this forum. Can anyone tell me the proper torque for the head bolts on my 1983 Johnson 4.5? I also need the side plate bolt torque. Unfortunately it needed the gaskets replaced but I don't know the proper torque...
