1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

In my opinion, not enough picture to really tell but others may disagree...but if it is savable, besides saving some "clams" a figure 8 pattern on a dead flat surface with some very large 120 grit sandpaper will make it pretty damn flat. Mix that with new gaskets, and torquing them correctly...

They may be listening more than you think but in my case I stopped telling them and then after quite some time they came asking me. I had to learn the slow way but if you listen to every word I say you may learn faster. Up to you I guess.

Yeah all, a little more to share with the guys you give up their valuable time to I-boats When I do my day job I get extremely lucky to be around some pretty neat vintage stuff. This is one of many different things at this place but I'm going to just share this. Enjoy.

External ground and yes it would seem it's not available. Never ran across that. Seems brp is cutting back. Look for the aftermarket freaks to come out of the woodwork or lots of used ones. You could always go with a gauge but put in a big giant blinding red light if you do. Audible is best...

Well his part number came back as a two wire temp sender so I could only presume that's what he had. My mistake as I didn't look back at his motor. Thanks for the correction.

I believe lots go with the one wire and eliminate the quick start feature but there may be a few out there. Cheers.

Unless you see "wrench" damage I'd say "No". Just normal. Wire brush, acetone chemical bath...black rattle can and get some on your fingers! 😊

Just to add, spray some propellent next to the carb shaft sides and post what it does and how does the linkage compare to the new used one.

When have you replaced all the fuel lines.... fuel filters? I suggest starting with a portable tank and see what happens....otherwise boil it out and use OEM parts. No OLD gray fuel line and no wing nuts. Going old school on you!

Fl Floats set incorrectly can also effect the fuel flow. Crosbyman is very wise.

I think your carbs should be boiled in a ultrasonic mechanical cleaning machine. And then go through it. What you describe is exactly true. Falls on its face when you go to hit it. Lean situation. Probably not good for it at all.

Certainly lots of good info here, did you use OEM parts on the carb in the beginning? Welch plugs are easy in my mind...I use I drip of lock tight sealer. To many compression tests and to much writing, not enough diagnosing. Work until it's fixed. What happens when you pump the primer ball?
