Advise Please on Rebuilding Merc 850 Center Bowl Carb wm-3

Hi. I have the genuine Mercury Manual but I thought I'd ask here for pointers. The purpose of the "rebuild" is general maintenance with the hopes of improving idle and mid-range performance. All suggestions will be appreciated. Are there any typically "forgotten areas" on these carbs...

Help Please with E'Rude 15HP 1978 Wrong Coils Installed?

Hi.... New to me 1978 15 HP Model #15854B. Previous owner said wouldn't start...so he installed 2 new coils. Still no spark. He gave up and the motor is now mine. One thing I notice: Coils installed are #582508. Parts sites seem to indicate they should be #584561...but it's ambiguous...

Was Evinrude 15854B originally an Electric Start? And....if it was......????

Hi. I have an Evinrude 15HP 1978 Model 15854B. I have looked up the model number and everywhere I have checked it appears to be inconclusive as to whether this engine was originally a rope start (only) or Electric with rope. I thought that OMC model numbers would indicate things like that...

Did Suzuki manufacture the 4 Stroke 15 HP for Johnson in 1996?

Hi. I recently acquired a 1996 Johnson 4 stroke 15 HP J15FRLEDR. Is this engine made by Suzuki? Powerhead only or the entire motor? Does it reference to a particular Suzuki model for that same year? Thanks...Chuck

Can we discuss the practice of testing crankcase vacuum on a small OMC?

Hi... I was reading an article over on Duckworks and ran across something that I'd like to learn more about. He shows a home-made crankcase vacuum "test plate". Look at the picture. http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/07/columns/rob/index3.htm I'd like to know when this sort of testing would...

Is there an alternative to OMC's $18.00 Plastic Flange Bushing #303140?

It's a bushing that should cost 50 cents. Can someone who has one perhaps measure it and/or provide a source ? If I knew OD, ID length and thickness I could probably pick them up from someone like McMasters-Carr? It's #72 in the drawng...OMC part #303140

Does Brand Matter for Coils and Points for the Universal Magneto Motors?

Hi, Most of the posts here mention Sierra as a suitable brand for the Coils and tune up kits for the 50's and 60's OMC motors. A visit to i-boats store lists coils by Mallory and CDI as well. I imagine that OMC also has their branded coil. Anyone have opinions? The same question for points...

1964 3HP Lightwin: Getting the covers to align?

Hi. I was just given a Lightwin; 3HP 1964. It came to me with the covers removed and I can see why. Alignment is bad at the front. The mixture adjustment is not centered in it's hole and the speed control lever slot is un-even from side to side. The covers are a casting and the mounts do...

    1955 Fastwin Carburetor question

Hi, I've gotten my 1955 Fastwin 15HP running pretty well...but I still think I need to do better. The PO rebuilt the carb and I have found a couple of things that he did wrong so I keep delving deeper. I notice on the parts diagram that there is a washer (Part #78) that sets behind the 2...

Can we talk about Tank-Type Gas Water Heaters?

The 40 gallon gas water heater in my house was installed in 1995; I will need to replace it soon. What is the straight story on water heaters? I went to Home Depot yesterday and saw what I expected: They have heaters labeled "GOOD" "BETTER" AND "BEST". 6, 9,AND 12 YEAR WARRANTIES. I...

Can (does) OMC Pressure Tank System contaminate fuel?

Hi.... Found a little time to work on the '55 Fastwin. After running for a bit in the test tank, I un-plugged the dual-hose gas line in order to allow the carb to run dry. I noticed black fluid dripping from the pressure side of the quick-connect on the engine. Is this carbon contaminated...

Does Heating Air reduce moisture content? (For HVAC Folks...and other smart people..

Hi, I've never been clear as to whether or not heating air (like in a house in winter) will reduce the humidity. When air is heated....where does the moisture go; if in fact it is reduced? I can see that with a gas furnace that is vented to the outside....that is where moisture could go...

WHY do people do this to their FASTWIN Cowl Supports?

Hi... I have a 1955 Fastwin 15. I just got it recently...and I noticed right off that the cowl doesn't really fit very well. The carb controls aren't perfectly centered in their holes...and the hinged side (port) of the cowl has a real hard time snugging up with the rear clamp. The front...
