    Outboard Powered Formulas (Thunderbird)

Why is it that with all the "original" brochures scanned and available for viewing at the Formula site....that there is nary a mention of any outboard models. Are they not "true" Formulas? Even the NADA listings seem to skip over them. I know they made them; I own one. Mine was made in Paso...

    How to test Tecumseh Coil?

I just acquired a 5HP Sears Tecumseh/Eska with the magneto ignition (it's a 1970 model Spark initially was weak sometimes/non existent other times. I replaced the condensor. The points looked new...but I cleaned then a bit. The coil certainly looks OK.....but I need to check that now...

    Anyone Work in Health Insurance?

Hi, My situation is that I'm 58 years old and looking to retire. I plan to close my company (thru which I've provided myself a Blue-Cross Policy) and thus will need to consider purchasing health insurance as an individual policy. I hear stories that many times individual coverage is difficult...

Can Starter be replaced w/o Pulling Engine?

Take a look at this installation if you have a moment... Apparently the starter needs R&R.....in looking down in there...it looks essentially impossible to reach the starter without pulling the engine. Is this correct? I've never worked on V8 I/O's.....they sure look to be a nightmare...

What are these called; and who makes them?

I'm searching for the simple transom mounted wheel that's used on car-topper boats so that they can be wheeled into the water once they're lowered off the car. Typically; the wheels can be flipped over in their mount....so the wheels stick up in the air once the boat is underway on the...

    Lake Manicouagan (PICS!)

Anyone been out on this lake? It's quite far north in Quebec...and from what I've read is in a rather hostile environment; as in cold and windy. Sure looks strikingly beautiful from the air though. Sure gives a new meaning to "Boating around the Lake"; eh? Thanks for reading, Chuck

Can you explain the appeal of Short Socks?

I know; hardly a "tech topic"..... :) I see more and more people wearing these "short socks"...barely covering the ankle. What's up with those; anyway? They look so uncomfortable...looks like they'd always slip under the heel. Is it a style/fashion thing....or is there some other reason...

    Scott Atwater Model 473

Hi All, I'm looking to talk to someone who owns a Scott Atwater 7.5HP from the 40's.... Specifically a model 473. It's a twin cylinder...no shift...prior to all the "bail-o-matic" stuff. I've poked around the various SA and vintage boards...a lot of newer SA stuff out there...but I've yet to...

How to See who owns and who hosts a Website

Can someone describe the ways to determine who is hosting a particular website.....all the way from the hosting ISP through the "backbone supplier" to the net. Secondly; is it possible for a website to be set up in such a way as to keep that information from being available to the public? If...

The other night I witnessed a friend replacing the HD in his Powerbook. He had never done it before, and had no service manual. What he did have was this website http://www.ifixit.com/cart/catalog/ (Click on "FIXIT GUIDES") They have (IMHO) amazingly well done; step-by step instructions...

Cross Flow, Direct Charge and Loopers...What is the difference and which do I Ha

Hi, Every so often I see mention here of at least three different engine designs.Cross Flow, Looper and DirectCharge. At one point someone even posted an image that showed the difference between at least two of them. I'm still confused. Which one came first? Are all three still used? One...

    Can a Re-built Engine be Re-built again?

Once a cylinder is bored oversize to correct damage (scoring and the like).....can that engine be "re-built" again? With older engines that come up for sale it's hard to know if they've ever been bored out...but the odds would be that in many cases they have....so; if one buys an engine like...

Significance of Carbon in exhaust: 115 HP Four Stroke

My neighbor just got back from lobster diving;and when we went to flush the engines in the driveway we noticed black carbon residue floating on top of the water running down the curbside. That is unusual....not seen typically; at least not in that quantity. What does that siginify? A...

Transmission Chatter: 1993 Camry V6 Automatic

I just noticed today that when backing up, the transmission seems to chatter a bit when first starting backward. If I firmly apply the brakes and apply moderate throttle there is no slippage. Only when the vehicle is allowed to move. Forward operation is normal. I'm the original owner with...

    Mercury Mariner vs. Mercury Force

A couple of questions.... When did Mercury introduce the Mariner line? Are they identical to the "real" Mercs except for the obvious cosmetic changes? It appears that the Mariner name has been dropped? As for the Force; I realize that they are totally different engines (I used to own a...
