Given a '41 Johnson TD 15...Q re manuals, parts & use

In the past on this forum I asked some questions about the care & feeding of Eska & similar lightweight air-cooled outboards & often got the response "they're junk--get an old johnny-rude". Well the beat-up old Sears is still humming and I've just been given a very nice, very old Seahorse TD...

    OK which small "johnnyrude"?

I have 3 small outboards for my 12' aluminum boat that all run well but have some aspect about them I don't like. Mariner 5 HP - heavy at 54# & needs external tank...just more weight to lug uphill. Eska 7.5 HP - Starts & runs fine but a little noisy and shaky. 44# dry. Sears Gamefisher 7 HP -...

    Can Eska ignitions be repaired??

I posted a long while back about my no-spark 7HP Eska #1747. I bought a used ignition plate off eBay and it now runs (yea!!). Seems to me I ran across some mention that it's possible to repair one of these assemblies or swap parts from other brands. Anyone know the trick or where I can find out?

What would you do with this Eska?

I bought an Eska 7hp at a yard sale last summer. It's in nearly mint condition with even the prop wearing almost all its original paint. Problem is it only ran for about 1/2 hour before quitting--no spark. Looks to be the dreaded solid-state ignition module. My plan was to retire my old Game...

    Need YOM on Mariner 5M

I've tried all the sources in this sections' Sticky, and everything I could Google but I can't find my serial number in any range listed. I have a 5M sn 661 034994. The place this motor was originally bought from, and any service history, went bye bye last year. Seller told me it's an '80...

Outboard oil in an air-cooled engine??

I may be misinformed but I've always been told that outboard oil is specially formulated to not gum up at the lower temperatures typical of water-cooled outboards. Don't use chainsaw oils, etc. But what about an air cooled outboard? Isn't that more like a chainsaw? For older engines like...

'82 5hp single cyl. cooling question

I'm a little confused about this air cooled motor. I thought there was supposed to be a telltale for the cooling water in the lower unit but when started in a tank, nothing. Looking through old posts I saw a mention of a thermostat. I haven't let this thing run more than few seconds before...

    Eska 1747C (1973 air-cooled 7HP) oil ratio

I just bought this at a yard sale today. It's my 3rd old outboard and I bought it mainly because it has a twist-grip throttle and my others don't. The problem: I can't get it to keep running. As soon as I got home with it I stuck it in a barrel of water & fired it up. It ran strong in...
