Between A to D? (mini rant)

This grammatical screw-up is appearing more and more in the media. It is annoying. A clear statement would be: "A to D", which includes A,B,C and D. or "Between A and D", which includes only B and C. "Between A to D" means nothing useful. Why don't the media get...

    How 'bout them Cowboys?

Handed the Colts their first loss of the season. Those guys must be a lot better than their record shows.

How to reduce silt ingress to my pond/tank/lake?

When at full pool my catfish pond has about 5' of water and about 8'-10' of silt accumulated over some 30-50 years. In very dry weather (what else do we get?) it drops to 1'-18" of water. My horses are in peril if they try to slog the silt to get to the water. The downstream side of the dam...

What "old fashioned" items do you look for?

Maybe it's just because I am old that I remember things my parents and grandparents used that aren't available anymore. I had to go to an antique store to find a covered glass butter dish. Still haven't found a dish towel rack with the swinging arms, a one handed skulling paddle, Silex coffee...

I'm sick of politics. Let's discuss religion.

I had hoped, fruitlessly, that with the election over some of the political squabble would die down, at least until the left screws something up real bad. No hope. How about this: All Gods are real. No Gods are real.

Taking your GPS on a plane? Look here.

Got a sad lesson on my trip to Hawaii. My Garmin, with card loaded up with detail maps for the visit, arrived with the card blank. Guess screening Xray or mag scan erased it. If I ever do that again I am going to carry the card on my person and reinsert it at my destination.

    Cell phone to Hawaii?

This is not a dumb question, it is an old person question. Will my cell phone work in Hawaii? Can I call home? Can I call numbers there? Thanks for your patience. :)

    What the RATZAKRATZ is this??

Wanted to check the weather, so I turn on my huge screen HDTV and select VIPR radar channel. There, blocking about 80% of the screen is a POP-UP SCREEN from Norton telling me my subscription has expired!! Dang right it has expired; I quit using Norton a couple of months ago, but I was using it...

    Micropuzzle.

I have a 700W Kenmore microwave oven that I bought in 1987. I have been half hoping it would croak so I could get one of the new 1250W units with a turntable. This morning after steaming the veggies for my breakfast it started beeping weakly and erratically. The display went to wierd numbers...

    Golden Age Passport

There are advantages to getting old (beside the advantage of avoiding the alternative). Several years ago I bought this Golden Age Passport at some National Park (don't remember which) which provides lifetime admission to National Parks and other facilities administered by the Dept. of the...

Why I am a big fan of high automotive tech.

I resisted for years getting a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Then it was power brakes and steering. And so forth. . . BUT: High tech has saved my grits a couple of times in the past few weeks. Cruising down Santa Fe street in Weatherford at about 40 (legal). Some chick in a 'stang...

    How sweet it is!!

A gentle, soaking rain has been falling here for almost 18 hours. Haven't had a day like this in several years. Gotta go check the tanks in the morning. 8)

    Ornithologists, what happened here?

As most of you know, I feed a huge flock of hummingbirds. Maybe as many as 100. All day there is a dogfight going on on my front porch, but it is particularly fierce early morning and late evening. There may be as many as 20-25 birds at a time maneuvering for the 12 "blossoms" on my 3 feeders...

I hate 'puters in general and AOL in particular.

I recently got my system reformatted and upgraded to WindowsXP. Loaded the files I saved before the reformat. Many that I forgot to save are gone :'( Loaded drivers for printer, scanner, camera. All worked okay. Configured IP for wireless broadband. everything still seems okay. Installed AOL...

Long distance sound in a non-sound-polluted environment.

I have often bragged of the peace of The Hideout. How is this: Was out on the front porch for a smoke. Quiet as usual. Then I distinctly heard thunder from the west. I listened for a while to be sure it wasn't my imagination. Could see the very tops of anvil clouds right on the horizon. Yup, I...

Is this worth trying? ebay: scam or bargain?

There was a Honda BF50 on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150017262858&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005 I bid $1325. Then I Emailed the seller a few questions. He refused to answer and instead offered to sell it to me offline. I quit bidding. There were 23 more...

    (Mostly) False alarm.

The good news is that I was not a death's door after all. The bad news is that I spent 2 1/2 days in ICU with no salt, no sugar, no real food, no caffiene and no nicotine (not to mention no BEER!); connected to innumerable devices to analyze and display every function of my body except misery...
