    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

I'll look into that. I don't feel that's the issue since over half the engine is supported by the trailer but I'll rule out what I can. It's in the water now I'll check it next time it's out

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

I'm sure I'm at least 1/4. But not exactly sure where I begin to go too much. Trim gage doesn't work

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

Not sure exactly but I would say less than half. Yesterday I tried it out with my camper battery in the bow (approximately 70 lbs) and it helped a little but not nearly enough

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

Tach is correct. Matches the tach setting on my timing light very close. Boat is definitely not waterlogged. Haven't checked the keel but I can't imagine that's an issue. I had it out yesterday and I could be over trimming like Scott suggested, but that's with a 15P. Should I really go to 13p or...

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

Rpm numbers don't add up because the boat will porpoise before I can trim all the way. As you and Scott mentioned I think I'm in a good place with the 15p prop, just a matter of pushing the front end down. Blue fin had a similar hull with an I/O and they put the gas tank in the front. I...

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

After it settles I am running around 3500- 3600 at WOT with a 15p. With a 17p I could go 4000. You're saying to keep the 15p and add weight in the front? Starcraft put everything in the back. Gas tank, battery. I've considered routing the battery to the front.

    1985 Starcraft porpoising issue. Prop??

So I bought the boat last year. It's an 18' aluminum with a 2.5l I/O mercruiser. Runs fine and is mechanically sound. Started with a 17p prop and I could get it to 4k RPM. If I trim any higher it starts porpoising. Tag on the motor says WOT is 3900- 4300 rpm, but I read that the spec was changed...

    ESA and my findings..

Posting this in hopes it will be useful information for someone. (Basically trying to satisfy the requirements of 2 seperate companies) Okay so for starters i have a 1988 OMC 350 that someone before me had installed a petronix ignitor II electronic ignition paired with a .7ohm msd blaster coil...

    350 timing question

I think i got my ESA issue solved, (will find out once in the water) long story short i changed a .7ohm coil to a 3ohm coil so we'll see how that works out. ANYWAYS i have a timing question. I have the engine timed at 8° btdc as the manual says. As you can see in the attached pictures total...

White smoke(or steam) from valve covers

1988 5.7 and not sure how many hours. When its cold and/or at idle there is a moderate amount of white smoke coming out of the valve covers if i take the oil cap off. When i ramp it up to about 1500- 2000 rpm it goes away. Is this any reason for concern? Engine always runs good, mechanically...

    ESA stalls engine

Hello again, 1988 cobra 5.7 (standard not king). I had replaced my lower shift cable over the winter and i did it the proper way. Got all the correct measuring tools and lots of research. I'm pretty confident i installed and adjusted it properly. Goes from R to N perfect, N to Fwd perfect, but...

Please help me get my prop to fit

Prop swap. Hub kit? Hi everyone, I'm currently trying to change out my original 19 pitch prop with a 21 pitch. Im replacing the omc prop with another omc. The new prop is "deeper" than the old and the trust washer is a pretty sloppy fit in the the new one as where the old one it fits freely...

Not sure how heavy oxidation is on my red boat

I bought this checkmate boat last fall and I'm finally ready to compound and polish it. I already bought a variable speed 7" polisher and meguires 105 compound and 205 polish. A lot of the oxidation on it goes away once it gets wet (comes right back obviously) and where it doesn't go away i seem...

    Wet sanding and compound

So i want so wet sand my boat in the near future to remove oxidation. I want to do it right and there's an awesome video on youtube to show you how it's done https://youtu.be/ZexSavaT4tY and when he is done wet sanding he uses 3M marine high gloss gelcoat compound 06025. Great stuff im sure and...

    CSM with epoxy resin?

Okay so im going to make a PB and i have a sheet of CSM that I'm planning to cut up and add to the mixture (total boat epoxy resin) along with fumed silica for a thickener. Is this okay? If not what would be a good alternative to the CSM? Im going to fill in gouges in my keel. Dont care about...

    Sae 30 or 10W30???

Please don't hate me for ANOTHER oil post but i think this one is legit. So my manual calls for sae 30 (1988 5.7) HOWEVER. I noticed that the oil fill caps had gray paint on them (looks to be the exact same paint the rest of the engine is painted) and underneath the paint it says 10w30 and to...

    Yet another shift cable question

Im in the middle of i stalling a new transom end shift cable on my 1988 5.7 cobra. Everything is going well but the adjustment tool is off. I could measure it like the manual suggests and adjust the retainer by the transom then measure the cable from the center hole to the end of the casing, but...

    OMC 5.7 timing mark

So i have tried all the tricks and i simply can not read the timing marks on my motor, here is a picture out of my manual, i ASSUME (which is why i ask here first lol) that the part i have circled is zero. I can advance my timing light. So the manual calls for 8° BTDC so i can set it for 8° and...

Making PB out of epoxy resin

So i have a boat with some spots in the keel worn bad enough that some fiberglass is exposed due to the precious owner beaching it a lot. Anyways. I want to make a peanutbutter out of total boat epoxy resin with slow hardener, fumed silica, and chopped fiberglass. My plan is to prep the area...

    Best product for keel repair?

I know the term "budget friendly" doesn't usually go in the marine world, but i bought a boat (88 checkmate to be exact) that someone has beached pretty regularly. Its worn to where you can start to see the fiberglass mesh. What would be a good product to patch and seal this to avoid further...
