    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Providing an update if for no other reason than posterity. While I made some pretty good progress overall I didn't get as far as I was hoping to this year. Sealing the rivets and seams was not something I had built into my timeline, but once it came up it seemed like the right decision. Sealing...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

After digging around more regarding keel leak repair - and with the minimal leak I'm seeing there - would it be fair to use something like 3M High Strength repair filler on the exterior keel seam? I'm apprehensive to grind off the factor sealant on the inner keel - in the case that I do...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Great suggestion and I think this is exactly what I'm going to do. I did a leak test last evening, and while i only found a few leaky rivets I definitely want to make this thing as bullet proof and long lasting as possible. One thing that I didn't love seeing is some leaking coming from the...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Here are some mock ups of the cast decks and transom fabrication i'm currently targeting. It's gotten easier to visualize this with everything gutted and taken apart. So far I have re-secured the stringers, most of the rivets had let go on them, I then added numerous aluminum cross members to...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

@redneck joe did you use marine ply? I noticed previously in the build they did not. I'm assuming the only reasonable alternative to that would be something like Western Red Cedar, sealed well (more resistant to rot and solid wood?) Curious on your thought there.

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Question on the side ribs. I was initially considering using starboard to replace these. But after reading more I'm not so certain, would it be better to use new marine grade ply, seal it real well, and then paint it the color i'd like (black)? I definitely don't want to purchase starboard if...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

It was a long delay but the project is finally underway. All decking and old flotation has been stripped out. Running PVC for under deck wire ports and then pouring foam into bags for the under deck. from there i'll start building the main deck flooring and then begin fabricating the splashwell...

    115hp 2 stroke on a Stracraft Mariner 21 ft?

Thanks for the feedback guys. It's a '76 starcraft. Sounds like 115hp isn't a bad bet especially if I can find one at a reasonable price. Just trying to get up and running again this year.

    115hp 2 stroke on a Stracraft Mariner 21 ft?

I'm shopping for a new motor to put on my boat, the maximum it's rated for is 140hp. There are very few motors in my market used in the 135 - 140hp range. I wanted to get some feedback from folks on if a 115hp 2 stroke would be too underpowered for this boat? With my old 135hp blackmax i got...

Starcraft Mariner '76 21 ft Splashwell modification questions

This is great feedback and makes a lot of sense! I definitely feel like I have a path forward here, now I need to fabricate the new splash well.

Starcraft Mariner '76 21 ft Splashwell modification questions

Here are some more examples I've found. This all just leads me back to - anything should be possible here - i just need to ensure things are properly supported. But i'm really looking for experience from those that have refabricated splash wells to maximize space or reamagine their boat layout

Starcraft Mariner '76 21 ft Splashwell modification questions

That's a cool setup! This has been my curiosity. If the splash well is truly in place to support the high walls, could i run a vertical support like the other rib supports i took pictures of, and then connect that support into a lateral support that is lower. I'm really not sure, but at a...

Starcraft Mariner '76 21 ft Splashwell modification questions

I've done a lot of digging around the iBoats forums, and internet more broadly to really comb through what people have done regarding the giant splashwells on these older boats. I also know a lot of people's position on this subject: it's structural, leave it like it is - if you don't like it...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Oh, I could go above 4000, but that's when it ran rough, so i usually cruised between 4000-4500. So to your point it could have simply had the wrong prop. However, all that aside, the motor is toast, a rebuild quote at 4-5k on a motor that's worth 1.5k on a good day just doesn't appeal to me...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Truthfully running over 4000rpm it started to sound labored / bad. probably a sign of things that i should have taken more seriously before the piston ring blew. And regarding 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. i'm looking for more fuel economy, and a more modern motor over all. i'm ok losing the 2 stroke...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Sounds like we are thinking along the same lines! I'm open regarding which floor/deck material to work with, but i'm certainly leaning toward aluminum if I can source it well. It would help keep weight down (and top speed up). Granted I rarely run over 4000 RPM, but I also know moving to a 4...

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

That's awesome! I feel like I know those baits, I too run a small fishing company focused on muskies. And I too am totally ignored at the ramps in my current tin bucket. Not a bad thing honestly.

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Fair points, the kids won't be small forever that's for sure! All good points and suggestions here, thank you for your feedback you've given me plenty to consider.

    1976 Starcraft Mariner 21' Layout Changes? (v2)

Agree on the payments, not looking for the kind of debt a new boat would require. And nobody out there makes a deep v single console that seems easy to find. I took my layout from the lund musky pro v. Thanks for your feedback! I'm excited to build the concept. My main concerns are ensuring...
