    Blow air up water tube to see if it’s clear. Check that said tube is indeed inserted into waterpump housing grommet. But first, if barrel testing, make sure waterpump is completely submerged before starting (lower unit bolts 6” under water). Good luck!

    If it idles very slow and steady, you are likely fine. Should probably replace head gasket in case it has a slight leak between cylinders, that can get worse in a hurry.. and you can inspect cylinder walls too..

    20, 25, 30, and 35hp share the same powerhead and all other parts, except carb and intake manifold. Yours is a Canadian model.. that’s why you can’t find specific model. 1980 25 parts lookup should be fine.

    Clean both battery connections and test again. If no-go..test. Follow red wires from switch back to wiring block on non-running motor with cables hooked to battery. Should have battery voltage (12.5) where thin wire connects to wiring block. Shift motor to forward or reverse so neutral...

    On paper how much faster is a 15 HP compared to a 9.9

    My ‘85 15hp pushes my 14’ deep/wide alumacraft 23 mph Tested a ‘79 9.9hp on same boat - 18 mph. Both motors were tuned and running normally with standard 9x10 props. I’m sure a 9x8 prop on the 9.9 would have helped on my fairly heavy boat.

    Broken Choke Detent

    For others with broken detent.. Thread/secure a small zip tie between choke lever and surrounding detent piece. Creates friction so choke will stay engaged for starting. Sometimes zip tie works better on side of choke lever, sometimes bottom..depending on model. Good luck!

    You are losing power from one cylinder, likely spark issue. Could be a fouled plug, dirty pointset, bad condenser, bad coil, bad plug wire..

    Carb bowl must be vented. One of the holes in carb front vents to top of float chamber inside carb body. Confirm that the bowl vent is not clogged.

    Not sure on threads.. probably just bonded in somehow. Also not sure on those holes/orientation. Probably oriented to the side to help fuel atomization. You could try locktite. You could also find a used 9.9 carb easily, as folks often switch to 15 carbs..which are hard to come by. I have a...

    Main jet is on the side of that post.. just run a thin wire through it and blow it out. Under that plug is a brass nozzle..not to be removed.. Good luck!

    early 90's evinrude 20hp carb issue whipping my butt

    If your tank is new, and puffs up like a balloon in the sun, and your primer leaks (or is set to manual prime), your diagnosis makes sense. Make sure red knob on primer is parallel to primer body (normal setting), and loosen cap so tank doesn’t build pressure.. Good luck!
