    Biggest part of working on these old motors is is cleaning off the old gasket material. One set of reed blocks took me about 3 hours to do primarily because of the 50 year old gasket material. Does anyone have any good tips for removing old gasket material?

    Is the only way to check reeds is by pulling them out and looking at them or are there tell tale things that indicate they are bad or broken? I have a 1974 135hp Chrysler.

    I had the boat out Wednesday. Tweaked the low speed mixture screws to 1 1/8 and settled on that. Runs ok. Better warm starting. Sometimes doesn't idle perfectly but I think I might be done messing with it. Hopefully I can get out out on the water again soon to confirm. Thanks everyone for your help.

    Everything I have read says a looper is a better design. more efficient, less wasted fuel, crossflows push more raw fuel out the exhaust with each stroke

    Thanks, great information. Is the 1977 Johnson 70 hp a loop charge outboard? The parts diagrams show them with flat top pistons. That could make them a superior design.

    Thanks for you input. I have heard they are some of the best outboards ever made. I know at some point they started using a VRO pump so you didn't have to mix your own oil and used less oil at low speeds so it didn't foul plugs as easily. Just not sure when they started doing that.

    Thank you! Definitely noted. And if this does not get the outboard to run well I guess it means there isn't much else to do. I think I'm getting close enough now that I'll just tweak the idle screws out a 1/4 turn and see how things go. Thanks again for the help.

    Someone advised me a few years ago that if you get a Chrysler outboard to run decen then just run it instead of constantly tinkering with it. Maybe I'll just pull the plugs and see what they look like.

    Ok, had the boat out today. Ran it about 3 hours. It's running pretty good now. No plug fouling all day. I think switching to the L82C conventional plugs is the key. I don't plan on running WOT. Plus I used a 1.5mm spacer to keep the plug away from the piston. I'll pull the plugs soon post pics...
