Little known salt water impeller housing

I recently installed what is a called a Heavy Duty Water Pump Kit, F5H074 on my 1974 Chrysler 135hp outboard. The standard kit is a FK1033-1. The Heavy Duty housing is 2 parts instead of one and made out of some kind of alloy that looks like a combination of copper and stainless steel. The...

hard starting 1974 135hp on the water

Engine starts very well when I launch the boat. It only takes 3-5 seconds of cranking and then it starts right up. Then it will sit and idle for 5 minutes no problem. It's doesn't even cough. I motor out to the fishing spot, usually hitting 3/4 quarter throttle with no hesitation or problems...

Extra parts got my 1974 135hp back on the water

I just wanted to share some recent issues from a fishing trip. 2 times the engine died and would not start out on the water. Fortunately I have a 9.9 kicker motor and it got us home. The kicker cost me about $800 total so that was cheap insurance. Well worth it for peace of mind with a 47 year...

Starts off good then eventually dies

The diaphragm is new. I use stay-bil this week because I can't get REC gas. Fuel is only a few days old. Fuel pump seems to be a week point on these motors.

Starts off good then eventually dies

Found it. The fuel pump diaphragm was torn somehow. Is it possible to tear a fuel pump diaphragm by squeezing the fuel bulb to hard?

Starts off good then eventually dies

1974 Chrysler 135hp, has run good before, now it starts very well, idles very well for about 10 min, yesterday ran the engine up to about 3\4 throttle and it ran well for about 30 min then it seemed to miss a little for 5 min as we headed back to the dock, then it slowly died, started up with a...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

Had the boat out this weekend and it runs very well now with the new Intellitronix ignition box. The cold start problem is gone. It barely needs any choke and it was about 45 degrees outside. Still needs set to fast throttle for cold start. From what I have read this is completely normal. I...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

So I'm gonna put together a backup wiring kit. Blue wire to + on coil, - on coil to screw terminal on distributor, then add a condenser to help the points not burn up. So all I need to make up is 2 jumpers about 1.5 feet long with eyelets on each end and a condenser. I also have a backup coil in...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

From what I understand these motors will run without a cdi box if you have a points distributor. So if the cdi box fails I should be able to get back to shore with some rewiring. I mounted the new CDI box inside the boat instead of inside the engine with rubber shock absorbing mounts. This keep...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

Not sure if this will work. It's a video of the engine starting up after it's warm. Seems like the audio works ok. Really nice how fast it starts now.

    Startup procedure

Thanks for the replies. These old motors don't come with owners manuals and the service manual doesn't seem to cover startup procedures so we really need to help each other out. I plan on starting my motor again this weekend. I will post the results. Just doesn't seem like these motors should be...

    Startup procedure

Great thanks. I recently replaced the ignition box, points, distributor button and spring, coil and plug wires. So far it doesn't seem to need as much choke. That would be great. Where I live I have many cold starts with outside air temps in the mid 40's and it really struggled before. Hopefully...

    Startup procedure

I thought this might be an interesting and informative post. What do you do when starting your Chrysler outboard? Here is what I do with my 1974 135hp. 1. Lower motor into the water. 2. Pump gas bulb until firm (if it's not to noisy you can hear that the gas stops filling the float bowl) 3...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

Started it again yesterday and it seems like my problem with cold starts is gone, it was about 60 outside and it actually flooded. But it cleared easily and started right up and now the startup is really quick. Just a bump of the start key. Prolly need to work on a new startup procedure. Before...

    Engine weight 1974 Chrysler 135hp 1357HA

Hmm, I was checking Evinrude's and Mercury's from the 80's and 90's. I guess the older units are lighter. That should translate to better performance on the water and less stress on the transom. I like my 1974 135hp Chrysler. It's just like a lot of guys say, they are simple and just run with a...

    Engine weight 1974 Chrysler 135hp 1357HA

So far the 2 stroke Evinrude's and Mercury's in the same HP are listed at around 350lbs. That's a big difference.

    90 compression on 135 hp

Just tested with a new compression gauge (Blue Driver $40 on Amazon) now I get 140-140-142-140. Harbor Freight gauge is junk.

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

Finally had enough warm weather to install the Intellitronix ignition. It works, Starts right up. Can't wait for the ice to melt to find out how it runs. I really like the led on the unit that tells you what's going on. Solid green means good 12 volts, flashing green means good trigger signal...
