question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Every single wire on both harnesses is like that right up to the connector. Nothing left to splice too.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Thanks for the feedback. My boatside harness is just as bad as the engine side. check out the pics. I've found lots of sources for replacement harnesses, just $300 for the boatside and #175 for the engine side. I'll checkout surplus unlimited.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Well, my merc now starts like a beauty. After cleaning the carb, it was a lot better. I had a supposed "marine mechanic" do the link and sync but I suspect he didn't know what he was doing. The idle throttle stop was not even touching the lever so the carb plate was acting as the stop. I...

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

So good advice, thanks. Also, some comments about the non-choke aware people. Well, I am part of the 60+ generation and having been working on car and bike engines since the late 70's. I've spent my time about carbs and chokes. I spent more time working on 4-cylinder bike carbs than I should...

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

I use the choke and it starts pretty quickly but dies immediately after starting. If I advance the throttle, it starts and stays running. I thought that was an indication of a problem but the writeup seems to indicate it's normal if you don't have the idle lever.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

I've got a new to me 79 402 2-stroke carb motor that runs great at anything above idle but is difficult to start. I've fixed all the normal things. I don't have a mercury control, so I don't have the idle control lever. I do have the button to advance the throttle without putting it in gear. I...

compression on a 9.9 pull start

Thanks all. It is finally running well. It's just been really hard to start. I've learned to not prime it at all to start it. It starts of the first or second pull when cold now. I think the idle is too low when warm. I had a hard time with it stalling when trying to put it in gear.

compression on a 9.9 pull start

I did a compression test on my 1999 9.9 2 stroke and it was 90-92 psi on both cylinders. That sounds low to me but I've never tested a pull start motor before. Is this low or okay?
