    That one I usually bump the engine until zirc is on a spot where you can get at it with grease gun with a hose on it I usually grease the gimbal when the boat is just out of water on the hoist and have it idling to get grease through out bearing when it’s moving

    This is your best bet, pull drive and inspect. as Mentioned adding grease wont do anything if bearing is bad. The zero near the drive shaft is for the coupler .     I would take the Volt meter and gap tester out on the water. When/if it happens again use them to rule out if this is spark or fuel related. Thinking with your other electrical stuff going on if you are getting a voltage loss leading to spark strength loss? Just swag from keyboard view ...

    You could get a 12 vdc powered sump pump like used for back up sump pump connect to a garden hose to pump into muffs. A bilge pump may work but not sure how much pressure this will supply.

    the rubber impeller separates from the metal core that is keyed to the vertical driveshaft. Seems to be common in the cheaper aftermarket replacements.

    I think if you run it on land and shift in and out of gear and it works/ no clicking once in gear should be ok . I think the 6.5" just means the lower is stretched.

    That's not what I meant... meant that you dont need a trim gauge , nice to have yes but certainly would spend time and money to put one in or replace the sender unless I was doing bellows anyways.

    having had boats with out gauges or non functional gauges I would not bother. The limit switch is to make sure you do not over trim at speed and is somewhat needed

    12 v to positive side of coil . Points or electronic should jump 5/16 or 3/8 on gap tester if in good shape

    Would also test the thermostat housing with an IR gun to see if gauge is off. If you take the thermostat out you can test it in a pot of water use a meat thermometer to see what temp it starts opening at

    Less work than you think as long as there is 4" in front of the 4.3 if you friend has a complete merc pulleys to prop and boat is in good shape this is the way to go. Otherwise yes a 4.3 out of a wrecking yard is cheapest way
