    Swap wood panel in upholstery

I've been watching Tpenfield's i/o to ob thread too, very interesting and he's a clever man. I'm probably a bit more familiar with 'wee bit' because it's a common Scottish saying and I'm British but I see the funny side of using exacting formulas and 'wee bit' about the same thing. Thanks for...

    Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI

I am no expert in these particular engines but I do know about fuel injection in general. Behind the scenes most fuel injection systems will give extra fuel for a cold start to give the same effect as pulling the choke on a carb engine. If you try to start a hot engine with that choke effect...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Point me to the thread so I can have a laugh hehe. Good, because I didn't wipe it off. When I came back to the wood yesterday it seemed too far set to wipe off without leaving it looking a smeary mess and as it seemed to be soaking up and setting anyway I didn't see the point in wiping off...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

There's no upholstery near it yet. I thought the concern was it could spontaneously catch fire during curing, not when it's gone off? I'll have got some drips on stuff in the surrounding area, plastic bags etc. I left it to dry when the stuff was still runny and the occasional drip falling off...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Thanks for all the comments :) I know I'm over thinking it lol I saw some Thompson's WaterSeal in a couple of local hardware shops and nearly bought some instead of using Old Timers mix. How long is the Old Timers stuff supposed to take to go off? It's around constant room temp in the cellar...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

I've just given it the first coat using 1/4 boiled linseed oil, 1/4 polyurethane varnish (oil based) and 1/2 mineral spirits mix. I don't know if old-skool none poly oil based varnish would've been better but I'd already bought the poly varnish. Done it in the 'cellar', what you'd probably call...

What’s the Best Way to Transport a Boat Safely?

I tow my 95 Four Winns Sundowner 205 on unbraked trailer behind a Nissan Elgrand. Have towed it on narrow Welsh roads on which the trailer is wider than half the total width of the road, there are dry stone walls on both sides of the road, the road is winding, steep hills and heavy trucks come...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Thanks. OK last question on the mix of stuff for protecting the wood lol.. Which of the two mixes would you use and why? I was originally going to use epoxy and bought some but was reminded that it'd probably be too hard to staple to if I used expoxy. Then I was told about the 3 part boat mix...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Hmm, I don't know whether to use the linseed, polyurethane varnish and mineral spirits mix or use the linseed, traditional varnish and mineral spirits mix now lol. I don't want to start any arguments hehe but I'll ask @tpenfield again and anyone else who might be able to help me decide, all...

Thanks, was just about to ask if you meant the oil formula used traditional oil/solvent based spar / yacht varnish.

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Hehe, I read Tpenfield's description of the formula, read another description I found on this forum a few years ago which also said polyurethane... What's in the old timers formula instead of polyurethane (is it regular oil/solvent based varnish)? I've already bought the poly stuff but I can...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Thanks, I'm in the UK, I could probably buy some Minwax polyurethane but other brands are probably more available. I'm confused about what exactly it needs to be. The Minwax stuff doesn't mention being a varnish, does it need to be a varnish or just paint etc? Would this be suitable...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

The hinges are attached to the panel using Tnuts in the panel and taper head machine screws through the hinge to the Tnuts. The Tnuts are prevented from pushing through the panel (if, say, a bolt were partly unscrewed from the Tnut and the bolt pushed against the Tnut instead of pulling) because...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

. I searched the forum for more info on the old timers wood protector. Can get the boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits no problem but I read it has to be oil/spirit based polyurethane varnish and I'm struggling to find that. It has to be oil/solvent based or won't mix with the linseed oil...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

I'll need to check but I believe the holes in the boat fibreglass already have some reinforcing wood beneath them, can tell due to the way the screws tighten. I didn't need to make new holes, managed to fit the hinges in the original holes.

Thanks but I managed to get the hinges in just the right position so I didn't need to make any new holes in the boat or the new wood :)

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

I would but my big air compressor broke years ago. I used to use it for a bit of spraying but mostly to run a small air drill and angle grinder. When it broke I no longer really needed it but my brother in law used to call round regular to inflate his car tyres instead of getting his slow...

    Swap wood panel in upholstery

Great info thanks Scott. The front end of this panel mates up to the rearside of the back seats which is also upholstered, the upholstery on the rear of the back seats should 'give' a bit too. It was a good fit before even with the rotten wood, just a bit of friction to push this hinged panel...
