    Hey, I know you know this engine. I just noticed that the installed amplifier is actually for the 85-100 HP motor the part number is one digit off from what it says mine is supposed to be. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? 389550 vs 389549 Thanks in advance

    Ok..... In what world is this a not sophisticated???? Has anyone been in one of these??? I see a spot near the bottom where the rubber seems to have melted away. I'd hate to waste my money on something that isn't bad.

    Just an update. I have reassembled the top of the engine after cleaning and adjusting the points (0.010) replaced plug wires and I repaired a few wires along the stator to rectifier area.. no luck. I still have zero spark. I did both the tap test and the voltage test (found in repair manual)...

    The issues with that is if I get it fixed without the proper lubricant I will have to disassemble it again. As a mechanic I strive to do things only once. The spring can kill my spark so in my head it can be an issue not being lubricated. I do understand what you are saying though. I'm waiting...

    According to racerone that is incorrect. So I'm at a loss on this one. It has a light coat of clear/brown grease, not oil.

    Is it supposed to be?? I was reading through the manual and it says I'm supposed to use OMC type D marine lubricant on the anti reversing spring. However it appears to have a thin type of grease present on the spring currently(I have not cleaned it off) according to Google the type D lubricant...

    No the only part the was oily was the little oil wick that rides on the crankshaft. Very little grease located around the anti reversing spring ( as the manual describes).

    I have some dielectric grease here. It doesn't really show arc symptoms just some black soot I was able to wipe some of it off with a rag. If it was arcing it would have been occurring at all the plug wires. I inspected all the wires boots and the cap for signs of cracks or arcing. None found...

    Question about the stator. I see some spots that appear burnt on the underside of the stator each spot coincides with the plug wire locations. Is this normal or a sign of spark escaping from my distributor?

    I found 3 distinct rub marks on the underside of the distributor, is this normal? Or should this be replaced? Cleaned and adjusted points, checked anti reversing spring, it's good.

    Ok awesome! That helps a little bit, I just pulled the flywheel off, the stator looks ok to me and tested at 1.0 ohms off the engine. The points look dirty to me and out of adjustment. I fixed a lot of wiring before the engine, there in no actual plug on my boat the harness runs through from the key switch to the engine...

    No I haven't pulled the flywheel off and checked anything underneath it. I was hoping to avoid that. Marineengine.com part number 0502882. The day the wires burnt it only started for a second then died. Still cranks just fine. The battery is new.

    No. Not that I can tell. I did the test in the book and I have no visible spark from the coil. It is new as is the rectifier. I was really hoping that was all it would be. I'm not that lucky. It ran great when I had it out.... until it didn't.

    The only thing I can't check is the amplifier. It is available but cost is $400 not trying to throw $400 darts at y boat.....lol I was a diesel mechanic for 20 years but honestly that means nothing when I look at the electrical system on this boat motor.
