I have a ‘69 evinrude 6hp I replaced the impeller in. When trying to insert the shifting rod off the lower unit into the connector that connects the 2 shifting rods I can’t get the lower unit shifting rod into the connector enough without making it so I can’t get my screwdriver in there to put the bolt back in. Both the lower unit and outboard are in neutral and am I doing something wrong?

Yes.-----just pull up on the lower shift rod ( turn the prop ) and bring the upper shift rod down as far as it will come down.----The notch on the shift rods MUST line up with the hole before you put the bolt in.----Shifting will be correct when you do it this way !!

Thanks I got it in! One more question I also put in a new thermostat and new gaskets for it. The gasket leaks after I sanded all the old gasket off should I just get some marine grease on it to seal it completely?

The cover might be warped.----Use a file to see if you can correct the warpage.

That procedure might not work on a thermostat cover for this motor !

I sanded it and it really helped but still leaked a little. What I did is I took some marine grease and applied it on both sides of the gasket and so far it hasn't leaked a drop since.
