Well now , you have been encouraged to check and see if the belt timing / valve timing is still correct !----And your manual will show how that is done !

It's not saying anything on the belt specifically. My thought is... If you can't adjust timing, what's the point in checking the timing belt?

Owner's Manuals usually won't specify anything about correct belt synchronization. Service Manual should. If with internal banging sound already a correct belt resynch to specs won't do much. Piston head probably has already bent upper valve head, stem or valve guide or a combo of all 3. If keep testing the OB to find the hidden culprit will only worsen things internally speaking. It's entirely up to you, it's your OB.

BTW, Got my manual and it's saying you can't adjust timing on my motor ? Why would you need to readjust timing again, comes factory adjusted spot on. Manuals won't mention belt slip issues, are rare, only belt change and correct snych procedures.

All timing belts are put on, take off, should be replaced at X number of run hours, if not might break during operation and screw the engine, now imagine the extreme inflicting damage at wot...

You're welcome that's what the Iboats Forums are for. Recapitulating, Have someone check if belt went out of correct synch, if so, synched it again to specs. If banging continues check with a stethoscope at different powerhead sides while cranking the engine. Will know exactly where the noise is being produced and which parts are the culprit.

So I finally got outside today and checked the timing. I lined up the marks when cylinder 1 was in TDC and everything looked on point. I didn't use my timing light, just checked visually. The motor actually ran better today than the other day but still has the horrible noise. It never once died on me today.
There didn't seem to be any wobble anywhere along the timing belt, flywheel, crank, prop or shaft (extenally).
At this point I'm thinking maybe valves knocking? I saw that happen once before with a 4-stroke dirtbike but not sure why damage would be concentrated just there?
I'm gonna start researching mechanics in my area tomorrow but figured I'd make another post on here... incase anyone has a walkoff homerun or wants to take this to extra innings with me?!
Here is a link to the YouTube video I took, not sure what you will get out of the video but at least you will hear the noise I'm talking about and see the little bit of impact to the aluminum prop.

Remove lower unit and start the motor.----Is the noise still there ?------Not a lot of damage after hitting rocks !----Perhaps an issue with gears failing.--------A lower unit / gears coming to a dynamic halt will make you think you hit a rock !

So the final answer was rocker arms on the valves popped off when hitting the rock. It ended up being a very minor fix costing only one hour of labor ($85), no parts needed, and a lot of worry not knowing if I was going to have a motor for this year's Springer season!
