'00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

Pushing up trim on Throttle or Motor results in no movement, no electric motor noise, and only a click/pop noise from starboard side of motor. Less than 100 hours on the motor makes this disappointing.

I suspect a bad relay. How do I know which part is bad? How do I repair? Best place to get the part? Learning as I go.

in 2000 there were at least 6 versions of the 200.
without a model number its hard to say other than you either have a bad relay or the up control circuit to the relay is bad or disconnected.
if the trim motor will run down that indicates the motor and wireing from the relay to the motor is ok.

Re: '00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

The model is LZ200Y.... 2 stroke, oil injection.

I forgot to mention the up trim was working all day on the water and started having problems end of the day. After getting the boat on the trailer, I was able to trim the motor up one last time after holding the down trim down for 10 seconds then hitting the up trim.

After trailering home, I tried again and the up trim would not work at all.

Suggestions on how to trouble shoot appreciated.

Re: '00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

you say both the pan switch and the trottle switch only make the relay click for UP.
ok.
as you didnot post the full model number I am going to go by its a lefthand HPDI 200.
LZ
anyway, remove the electrical panal cover from the stbd side of the engine, you will see a 4" by 2" box with a 10 Ga blue wire and a 10 Ga green wire a 10 Ga black wire and 3 18Ga wires, blue, red and green.
now were going to test the up control circuit.
dissconnect the plastic connector with the 3 wires, use your multimeter and connect between the ground and blue terminal, hit the button up. you should read 12V, if not test the circuit on the blue wire back to the box. a quick test on the relay is to jump the blue wire at the relay connector to a 12V power tap, starter relay works well and is close.
if it goes down and not up it indicates the trim motor is ok and you either have a bad control circuit or a bad relay.
do a forum search and you will find I have posted a complete test before.

Re: '00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

Thanks for your help so far.

The Yamaha is an HDPI 200.

Tests so far and results...

1) Multimeter to Black and Red 10Ga wires on relay read 12V.

2) Multimeter to Black and Blue 10Ga wires on relay reads 12V when up trim button is pressed.

Removed Blue and Green wires from relay

3) Multimeter to Relay black and Blue connection reads 12 V when up trim button is pressed

4) Multimeter to Relay Green and Blue connection reads 12 V when up trim button is pressed

5) Green 10 Ga jumped to batter black and Blue 10 Ga jumped to battery red trims motor up. Reversing trims motor down. Therefore trim motor works.

I'm guessing the relay is working but for some reason not enough current is getting through it to trim the motor up. Not sure why down trim works.

I removed the relay. Need your advice on next steps. Should I assume relay is bad and replace it? Could there be something I'm missing?

Thanks for all the help so far... greatly appreciated.

Re: '00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

sounds like your relay is bad, its a very simple relay, be aware that at rest both the blue and green motor terminals are grounded.
the relay simply reverses motor polarity to the blue or green motor terminals for up or down.
I guess you did not do a forum search.
place your red meter lead on the blue terminal and the black on the green, trim up should be 12V positive, trim down should read -12V.
thats whats so nice about a digital meter, auto ranging and its not polarity sensitive.

Re: '00 200HP Yamaha Trims Down, Not UP

I was using an anolog multimeter. With the 10Ga Blue and Green disconnected and the red probe on blue relay output and black probe on green relay output, the meter showed +12V when I hit the up trim and went negative when I hit the down trim.

What bugs me... is that the voltage output from the relay was correct, but I had no way to measure amperage.

Is this what you normally find when this relay goes bad?

Do you know the part number for replacement?

Any recommendations on places to search for this part?

Finally, is the relay repairable? It has 6 screws holding together and I'm tempted to open it and attempt to repair.

Thanks again for all the help.

I found the relay part number... 68F819500000. Prices range from $210 to $270.

I'm going to order and I'll let the forum know if this solves the problem.
