'02 mercury 9.9

I am about to change the impeller on my merc 9.9 / '02 model. Does it need to be in gear before beginning this process? Also, do any of you have some suggestions/tips on making this process smooth and easy.

Claden,I suggest a factory manual.As I recall the shift linkage disconnects just below the carb.When removing the WP housing,the shift rod may pull up and disengage from the shift mechanism in the prop shaft.There may be a better way,but if this happens I usually pull the bearing housing and prop shaft to assure proper reassembly.This can turn out to be more than just a normal impeller change.Not impossible,just more work.<br />DHPMARINE
