02 Yamaha 90 TLRA Poor out of the hole

Bought a 2002 17' Alum Fishing boat last spring. The 90 hp Yamaha starts good, runs good at full throttle, but is poor out of the hole. Runs rough at lower RPMs although idles good. Local marine shop is suggesting that it needs a carb overhaul. My last boat had a 1990 Merc 90 hp, I had it for 13 years and never needed to spend a nickel on it. Does it make sense that this Yamaha would need carb work after only 5 years use?

Trash can be introduced into a carb in seconds. You have been very lucky.

Re: 02 Yamaha 90 TLRA Poor out of the hole

Maybe I have been lucky....
Can't help but wonder though.... Are marine engines more susceptible?
In my thirty plus years of playing with everything that burns gasoline, I can't recall ever needing a major carb overhual on anything else. Had to take a few apart and clean them up after prolonged storage.
At any rate the $1200.00 estimate to repair this problem is not sitting well...
I am fairly mechanicle, but I don't think I want to tackle a three carb set up.... Was just hoping someone would tell me....." No No it's always the foo foo valve that causes that problem on the 90TLRA, you can pick one up for $39.99 and replace it yourself"
Anyone..........

No?

Oh well thanks anyway:(

I would start by replacing the fuel filter element and spark plugs. I would then use Yamaha ring free in the gas. That price is very high for rebuilding the carbs. You could buy new ones for less. Do you have an external fuel tank? If so I would buy a genuine Yamaha fuel line. It is much better than any generic ones.

Re: 02 Yamaha 90 TLRA Poor out of the hole

Thanks BruceAML...
In fairness the price includes dyno testing before and after, fuel line and filter replacement, labor to overhaul the carbs (4 Hours@$100/hr), and parts. They tell me that Yamaha does not make a kit for these carbs, and there are no aftermarket kits available. So stuck buying all the bits seperately.
Actual cost to do the carbs is $742.00
Dyno is indicating a major bog after running any length of time on the idle circuit. After full out run, if throttled down for only a short time it will come back up without bog when throttled up again.

find another dealership.
carb kit is avalible, either as singles or for all 3.
bog after extended idle usually indicates a weak fuel pump.
those carbs can be done in 1.5 hours by most trainees.

6H1-W0093-10-00 is the part number for your carburetor repair kit. The list price is $20.49. Rodbolt has it exactly right, find another dealer. Get the Yamaha factory repair manual and do it yourself.

Thanks guys....
I wouldn't be afraid to do the carb overhaul myself, but what about tuning afterword....doesn't that get pretty tricky?
Would the fuel pump be part of the carb kit, or should I price that out seperately?

Re: 02 Yamaha 90 TLRA Poor out of the hole

OK Dumb question ! ! (Fuel pump)
I found a handy online fiche.....
I am going to order a new fuel pump, lines, primer and filters and start there....

Should there be two filters? Fiche shows one filter element (61N-24563-00-00) and the shop estimate included one 5/16" inline filter. I don't think it currently has this inline filter.

Once the ice comes off the lakes I will try it out.... If the problem persists I will move forward with the carbs.

Thanks again!

Just use the one factory fuel filter. Send me a private message and I can show you where to look up the part numbers.
