OK here is the deal guys my 18 foot 79 tempest had only 1, maybe 2 layers of 1.5oz csm over the transom and stringers before i ripped it all out i took it to the fiberglass guy at the local marina to confirm it was only csm with no roven or anything like that. He confirmed and then told me if i was using PL to glue the transom and stringers in place i would be more then safe by only adding 2-3 layers of 1.5oz CSM over the transom and stringers he told me the factory used MAYBE 2 layers but i looked like only one and it lasted 30+ years so i WOULD be safe doubling and using 2-3 layers of 1.5oz csm to cover the transom and stringers, is the correct? i see everyone use thick thick layers of rover or 1708 over these parts and 1.5oz CSM doesn't compare to this im really confused as this guy is also a marine serve-yer and he told me 100% that i would be FINE with 2-3 layers of 1.5oz csm to cover the stringers and transom after PLing them into place

IM LOST....... PLEASE HELP!!!!:D

Well cloth is a lot better and I find it easier to work with. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't want to use cloth?

Re: 1.5oz CSM Transom/Stringers?

the main reason being is i bought 35 yards of 1.5oz csm to start after talking to this fiberglass/ marine servery guy and then i seen all the posts showing roven and such so now im panicking and im out of cash but if this is what i can use i have all the materials to finish the glassing (1.5oz csm (LOTS) and tons of resin. so i hope this guy is right i just want some input because it sure seems like all of you guys know damn well what your doing

35 yards  Wow.... :D

Just be sure to use regular fiberglass resin ....... there has been some debates is epoxy resin wets out csm properly ;)

Since the best I can tell, csm is rated by weight per square foot, and cloths are per yard, 3 layers is still a goodly amount of glass. It may not be ideal, but its what you have and what many boats are made with. the only cloth in mine from the factory is the woven in the hull shell. Everything I took out from the stringers and transom were csm or chopper gun.

I'd just do it since you have it.

Have fun!

It would be nice to use another type of glass too, but if it held all those years just fine, why would you worry about it not holding up with new wood and more glass than when new.
