Hello all i have a 1.6 liter OMC on a 1989
Sport Craft 20 Fish Master, that apears to be stuck ill give you all a run down of this
I was going out Cat fishing last Semptember the
boat had gotten to where it wouldnt open up
and run that day would not get on plane at all
i also notices a month before the Plugs were staying wet and not burning fuel well.so while
coming to port that evening the engine would push but 5 Knots and 500 feet from the dock quit alltogether
so i got a TOW in from a friend, the engine was spinning freely at that point also.i took the boat home and tried to start it know fire to the
plugs.all fuses were good also.i reasoned a bad Pwer Pak or Stator.i didnt get back to the boat
because i have sinced moved to another location in VA.so last week i ordered the Power Pak and bought 2 new batteries hooked everything up
she will not turnover.the transmission engages smoothly in and out of gearthough.any ideas.the
boat has set since september 04 with cover on it
thanks

Correct it has be baffled the compression on that engine last spring was 113 to 115 in all 4 cylinders.and i didnt take it out but 2 or 3 times last year 2004.i havent checked the lower unit for water seepage though ill drain that today when i get home from work.i took all the plugs out and couldnt turn the flywheel and im a big man 275 lb.any advice wuld be helpful at this
point

OK. And we further assume that by "1.6 liter OMC" you mean a Sea Drive, correct?

Now, the first step is to drop the lower unit. No matter what's wrong, this has to be done at some point so lets do it now. If the powerhead is now free (I suspect it wont be) the problem has something to do with the driveshaft etc.

If the powerhead is still locked up, go ahead and pull the heads.

well the Heads are off,and the lower unit is off
the darn thing is still stuck :( picking the
Repair manual up from the Library today.also i
have tapped the Cylinders with a board to try to get it to free up didnt work, the Heads look good no sign of a crack or leaking.it was almost Dark when i got to this point so will look closer today.also the lower Unit oil was Clean as a pen. So where do i go from this point to find my problem ? also thank you for replying so fast the first time :)

Since the p/h is still stuck with the lower off we'll have to get into the powerhead. Go ahead and start pulling it off.

Do not beat on the pistons anymore. There'll be a time for that later.

Re: 1.6 Liter OMC FROZE Want turnover

An Update my Brother came over to help me with tearing down the engine, after looking at it he went and got his breaker Bar with a socket on it gave a couple solid pulls and the engine started spinning freely, the battery is spinning it freely now,
My question is there some reason you thought the drive shaft was the problem ? i must say that
i believe the engine sticking like that is odd
but it did set since August or September last year.maybe condensation did it the top right piston had some nasty stuff around it.other than that it looked fine to me.i never put a breaker bar on it before to see if it would turn all i
had was a Ratchet to try to turn it.
im kind of at odds on what to do keep going with
the tear down or put the heads back on,advice would be helpful again.
Thank you all

Did you check the compression before you pulled the heads - - if so what were the readings? If not I'd be tempted to put the heads back on with the OLD gaskets just to get the compression readings (you will want to install new ones before you actually run it).

What do the walls of the cylinders look like?

Back in September did you notice if the engine got hot before it froze?

I have been following your plight as I have a pair of 1987s. I suspect that Dhadley was thinking that you had some severe internal damage due to the frozen powerhead. He is one of the supreme masters here. I am just a driveway wrench.

Re: 1.6 Liter OMC FROZE Want turnover

i had from 113 to 115 compression in the four cylinders Spring of 2004.looking at the engine from behind it the top right cylinder had some crap in it rust and some soot build up.i replaced the Power Pack thwts when i found out it was stuck.it could of condesated i guess
i have owened a few Outboards and never this problem.although Virginia was really wet last year
The walls of the cylinder look good not even one groove cut. i PB blasted it good when i found it was stuck.but isnt it odd for an outboard to stick that easy? i can turn it now with my hands with the plugs in her.the gear oil
is also in great shape no water fouling this
engine doesnt get used that much because i work to much :( and the Chesapeake is only an hour away

This scenario is not uncommon with some Sea Drives. Go ahead and take it apart. Do not turn it over any more than you have to.

Actually lets do this -- remove the flywheel, stator and timer base. Then remove the 4 bolts holding the top main bearing cap. Once its loose go ahead and pop it off. There are 2 slots in the base that you can get small prybars into.
