Bruce,
What your saying is that it doesn't matter if the bearing is sealed there is still a grease fitting or tube

Re: 1 question before outdrive install

Thanks for the info Bruce.
I'll keep it in mind when I winterize in a month or so...as I'm 99% sure my bolt isn't hollow, and it's mounted to the slope of the oil pan about 30 to 40 degrees off angle from the dipstick. But it's very possible someone did replace that.
Just follow the dipstick and see where it goes.

yes

Its a very slight chance that is the problem. More likely, its a bellows failure. You just haven't found the problem yet.

Make sure you flex the bellows as you rotate them (I'm assuming they're completely off) so you can see hairline cracks.

I "think" you said earlier this was all original.....that means 2009 boat, probably made in 2008, and that puts your bellows at five years old.
It's time for new ones; they don't last forever, no matter how many hours are put on the boat.

Sun load/heat, dry rot, and storing w/ drive up all stress the bellows material. Just out of curiosity, is the boat in a slip, on a lift, or trailered to the water?

I dont think so. My SX-A has no zerk fitting or tube for greasing the gimbal bearing. I think Volvo got away from that when they went to the sx-a drive.

LaDawn, like I said in your other thread, you don't need a ruptured bellows to get water in there. Although that's the most common way, it is also possible to reinstall the drive incorrectly, binding the lip of the bellows as the drive is reinstalled. No more water tight seal. Ask me how I know...

Re: 1 question before outdrive install

I was so busy looking for a crack and low and behold where it mates up to the outdrive had a small kink. So I think thats where it was coming in at. No splits in the bellows. I'm glad at least I know where the water was coming in at. Now I can look forward to getting everything back together. Everyone I know with boats has outboard motors so they all have that dumb founded look. I guess I didn't do my homework when buying a boat and nothing but salt water. I have to learn to do this stuff myself.
I guess you had run into the same problem, dang how do you know when installing the drive that you don't do that. All the videos I see they man handle them like you can't hurt anything. Since you have the same outdrive do I put sealer on the motor side and if so what kind. I guess you can't put it on the drive side for pulling it and inspection.
Well you guys have been life savers or me. I'm sure the fun has just begun. Anymore advice throw it at me.
Thanks Ladawn

I trailer the boat I've had to change the leaf springs twice so far from the salt water. This is a learn learn and learn some more. Wow I just hope I can install all this stuff correctly and get back to playing. Read my next thread on the problem.
Thank you again, Ladawn

Here is the OEM service manual for your drive. Read thru the directions for installing the bellows and drive. No sealant needed, but Volvo recommends putting a little grease on the drive bellhousing where it mates up to the bellows so that it will slide into place easier (and probably less chance of binding and kinking anything).

Did you find any cracks in the bellows on inspection?

No cracks pinched on the end. I am going to set down and read these steps several times and hope for the best.
I will yell back when all is done to let you guys know the turn out. Keep ypur fingers crossed.

Yep, you are right! Didn't realize how many changes there have been to the SX-A drive.
