I found these two motors and am trying to decide on which will best suit my needs.
*1st motor is a 10 HP Johnson Seahorse, Seem to be in good clean shape, hasn't been run for a couple years, glass sediment bulb to the gas is cracked is the only problem I see. Owner said gas was left in carb last year and has gummed up and needs to be cleaned. He said it ran great last year? Comes with metal gas tank and fuel line. Asking $400.00?
*2nd motor is a 5 Hp Briggs and Stratton Outboard. It looks New, hasn't been used much according to owner? Asking $400.00

I am new to Outboard motors. Looking for one to go on my 14' Jon Boat. Not sure if the 4 cycle will be easier to maintain, more reliable and last longer. Or if the 2 cycle Johnson will be better?

Are the Johnson Seahorse 10hp's reliable or prone to problems?
Are the Briggs & Strattons Reliable or Prone to Problems?
Would like your thoughts on this?

Thanks

Re: 10 HP Johnson Seahorse

The 10 hp engines were great little engines. With some TLC they will last your lifetime and then some. Maintaince parts still avaliable for them, and easy to work on. The price is pretty high, at least around my neck of the woods.
I can't help you on the Briggs engines, have only seen a couple of them in my neck of the woods.
If it were me I would try to talk the price down on the 10 hp.

What would be a fair Price?
Motor is located in Indiana?
Just emailed the guy and here's what he said

"I'm the second owner of the outboard. Tank and line does go with it. The orginal owner only used the motor 4-5 times a year on a small creek. Was never run hard. I used it for the last 2 years. Great little outboard. I'm pretty sure its just the carb.gummed up. Ask a guy about it and he said the same thing. Only thing bad on it I know of is the.glass sediment bowl on bottom of carb has a chip on it and could use a new one. I sealed it with rtv silicone and let it dry good before using. Needs resealed now . Would make someone a nice outboard. I just don't need it anymore since I sold the boat."

A used engine is always in great shape.
You can figure on going through the ignition system, carburator, and replacing the water pump, as well as replacing the sediment bowl.
I bought one of those a couple of years ago and paid 150.00 for it.
A good price is what you are willing to pay, how far do you have to go to pick it up?

That old Johnson is a beauty. It should do you well.
