10 Johnson seahorse

I have just bought a 10 hr Johnson seahorse, Model #OD-15, serial # 1191064. Can you tell me the year built, oil to gas and the spark plug I need? Thanks

That is a '54 motor.
Spark plug is Champion J6C or equivalent, gapped at 0.03".
Others will chime in with the mixture ratio.

Model number is actually QD15, not OD just for your knowledge.

24:1 is fine with TCW3 oil.

Original spark plug was J4J, now J4C. It works better for continuous high speed operation, but the J6C is preferred for low speed/trolling. Gap either at .030". There is no true equivalent. Use Champions only.

just wondering where you found the model number and serial number at ? I am working on what I think is a 1957 10 hp seahorse (by pics) but before i order any parts need to make sure I am ordering the right stuff.I've looked everywhere, top of transom mount,freeze plug, thanks for any help

It will be on a small rectangle tag on the side of the mounting bracket, or on the welch plug on block. If both of these have been removed, well, you know what may have happened to that motor in the past.

Post a pic, we can pinpoint it quickly.

I have a verified (by model number with tag) 1956 one. I can and will post pictures to help you identify yours. I read somewhere that original paint color can be an identification aid.

Where in KY? Lexington for me.

It looks exactly the same. Looking at your second image the tag was connected with the two white looking dots, just above where it is sitting on the horse.

yup, great old '57 QD-18 10 hp. One of the all time greats. I used to have a '61 QD-22 myself. Here are some great links to help you keep it up and running. You'll want to run 24:1 mix (5.5 fl. oz. of TCW-3 2-stroke marine outboard oil to 1 US gal. of 87 octane gas), with Champion J4J plugs gapped to .030" and the magneto points set to .020". You can get any routine parts you may need like carb kits, tune up kits, reseal kits, waterpumps/impellers, etc... right here at iboats for about $20 each. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

tempting indeed.....I stumbled across a '69 18 hp E-rude for $150, I'm considering getting. Decisions, decisions :/ I'm trying to rationalize it to myself by saying I'll just fix it up and sell it, but I'd probably end up just keeping it. LOL!

I use to tell my self that I was going to restore the motors and sell them, that was over 100 motors ago, and have only sold a couple I think.

My wife says my collection is a one way door, IN only !

BTW, they dont make the J4J plugs anymore, they are J4C. I tend to stick with the J6C's in my QDs though.

yeah, I run the J6C in my 10 hp - 33 hp and never had an issue. i think they help burn the fuel a little better, especially at low speeds. I would've picked the c-list motor up already, but the pics look like it have had a pretty bad overheat at some point and it would take a tank of gas just to see it and come back, so I'm kinda "meh" on it as it stands. if it were in town, it would a little easier to justify. besides, I kinda want to fiddle on a little 3-7.5 hp motor instead, then I could keep it and justify it as kicker, or back up kicker or something i already know my FD motor pretty well and have a back up parts motor for it as is, so I don't really need another one. ah, well, the hunt continues......
