I have met good mexicans and bad.
I have met good africans and bad.
I have met good asians and bad.
I have met good europeans and bad.

I think anyone who would attempt such an effort is living in the third ring of hell and deserve help. But I would like to see other countries absorb these refugees in addition to the United States. We cannot take in all people from all countries whenever things become untennable in someones home country.

I also find it unusual that there several hundred thousand cubans and cubans living in america who haven't made a real effort to change the situation in Cuba in almost 40 years. Why not? They seem to rather die on the ocean than fighting for their country on their home soil. I remember the bay of pigs and it is a shameful chapter in our history, but it is necessary to continue the fight. Maybe they are but they certainly not organizing as far as I can see. Running away from a problem never solves them.

Good points Pointer... :)

The responsibility of the fact that Cuba is not a very tenable place to live solely lies in the hands of Fidel. The reality is though, they basically have a stunning, beautiful county. If and when the US sanctions get lifted, prosperity will improve there, and desperation and illegal immigration issues will dwindle.

I wasn't around in the 60's, but is there really much of a difference between the leadership in Cuba, Saudi Arabia, and that of the former Iraq regime (albeit Iraq was a recent active aggressor to it's neighbors)? My point being, the Saudis are basically a dictatorship, and are treated like the kings they are, just because they have oil.

The Saudis are at the top of the world's list of the human rights "worst" violating countries, and lets not forget 15 hijackers came from there...

If a different stance were taken towards Cuba, perhaps the US could benefit, Cubans could benefit, lives could be saved, and the immigration influx could diminish.
A win win win win.

Re: 10 more Cubans believed drowned off Fla.

Do any of you know how many millions of US dollars, medicines, foods, clothes, and the like that cubans exiles send back home to help mom, dad, sister, brother, who remain in cuba?

Do you know that the US dollar is as widely accepted as the peso in the markets and on the streets in cuba?

Do you realize where that money and those goods finaly end up?

In Castros grubby little hands, THAT WHERE! In cuba, the cuban government (Castro) owns everything...

Do you realize that Castro allows these people to leave on their rickety rafts? He's getting rid of the one who would cause trouble for him (un-desireables), and if they make it to the US, all the better for Castro.. These people will get jobs and they'll end up sending that much more US dollars back home to their relatives in cuba, eventually ending up, again, in Castros grubby little hands... Thats why the embargo don't work....

Did you know, Cuba has the highest healthy life expectancy (68.4 years) in latin america, which is near U.S. levels of 70 years.... The infant mortality rate is the same in cuba as in the United States (7.2 per 1000)... That tells me that they have good health care and they have decent food and clean water.... No issuse there....

You want to see some people who are in absolute desperate need of help and don't get any from anybody, check out Haiti... Those poor people don't even have clean water to drink, yet we turn them away from out borders... Why?

Pointer askes the question: "I also find it unusual that there several hundred thousand cubans and cubans living in america who haven't made a real effort to change the situation in Cuba in almost 40 years. Why not?" EXACTLY! Why not?

Now, don't go pointing fingers at me for being a racist or being prejudice untill you walk a mile in my shoes, TOAD.. I live among these people, many are good friends of mine... The one who are my friends know not to help Castros regime.....

Ladies and Gentlemen, there are traitors among us, and I'll bet you did'nt even realize it... Thats my neighbors for ya...

But, don't take my work for it...

Personnaly I would rather see the Cubans send the money to their families instead of billions sent to the drug lords in South America.

Just about everyone does not like the crimes that are committed in this country. Just don't forget that it is all the ethnic races that committ these crimes. So there is no need to point out that it is just one group of people that are bad.

For the Cubans to rebel is suicide for them. It would be like trying to fight the US Army with stones and sticks. Just like Iraq, the Cubans will need help to get their freedom. It is just a matter of time....

SS

Cubans? good people...I know to many to think otherwise. I young man next to me in my office came over on a raft his father made. His first attempt failed but he did not get caught...hes 27 years old and just got his citizenship a few months ago. As well as a engineering degree. I think hes been here five years.Hes also a free diver and spear fisherman. That what he did in cuba as a teen for sport and for money.

I know several folks who have come this way. I think every neighbor I have now is Cuban/American born. I rarely think twice about it anymore.

I think I'll have an empanada for breakfast today. :)
