First I'd to say that I'm not an expert like the one's here that answer all our questions. I've been boating over 30 years and I still need their help often.

This is ten reasons for all boaters to own a shop manual for their outboard engines.

They have a section on your wiring diagrams.

They give gas & oil mixtures.

A section for tuneups, including Spark plug & ignition point gaps.

Complete Tilt/Trim section.

Lube, & Maintenance section.

Complete servicing of water pumps.

Lower end chapter.

Very Important--- A torque setting for all bolts, including a tightening sequence for head bolts, etc.

Section on automatic rewind starters.

And a large troubleshooting chapter.

The last one is worth the price of the manual[about$30 bucks]. Happy Boating. Hal.

Well said
I have a book on my O/B and it didn,t help me one bit with the trouble I was haveing. But you are right with most maintance and trouble shooting problems the book is very handy every body that has a boat should have one.... ;)

To Barry & Lori; Thanks for the kind words. Your P. S. kind of hit home. For the last two months my wife & I have been fishing a local lake. We have caught 3 1/4- 3# even and on & on. Last Saturday we went to the same Lake for a Trout Tournement and you guessed it, we never caught a fish. Thanks again, Hal

I'm not trying to be pushy but I read a few posts this morning and figured this one needs a bump. YES, a manual will even show how to get a lower unit off.   If all else fails read the instructions. Happy Boating, Hal

I went looking for this thread this AM, found it on page 110. I'm bumping it again because I believe 50% of the questions could be found in a manual. I wrote this for Newbies at first but everyone can use it. I recently changed an impeller at the Lake {manual at home}, I guessamated the torque on all the bolts. As it turned out they were pretty close when I rechecked them at home, I guess even a blind Hog gets an Acorn now and then. Hal

I agree with Hal 110% :) The first thing I buy after getting a new vehicle/boat, is a repair manual. Usually two of them so that I can compare.

Repair manuals are the dirtiest and most used books on my bookshelf (if I ever put them there :) )

Investing those hard earned $20-50 in repair manuals for a +$10K boat is always a very good investment.
Lou

I agree with you 100 percent, but as a newbie a scant year ago I found my C*****S manual virtually useless. That why I rejoiced when I found this board. Keep offering all who ask good advice/answers. Now for other newbies I say this...if the aftermarket manual is garbage, go on ebay and search for a real service manual for your outboard. Money well spent, and just as valuable as the advice/answers you receive here for absolutely free.

If its not in the manual I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut its already been asked and answered here in this forum. All ya got to do is use the search feature here and it will come up. If it doesn't come up, rephrase your questionand try again.

Hooty concurs with all the above. One other thing I've mentioned before is the mfg.'s parts book. It not only gives part numbers but exploded views of almost all the sub-assemblies.
Priceless.

c/6

Hooty

A lot of good positive points were made. I really liked the one about the "dirty books". Lol! Anytime I see a clean service manual in a dealership I hope it's because they wore out the old one. The scary part is when they are all clean.

Run, Forest, run!!

Thanks in advance for being patient to this current Clymer manual owner. I need to ask a question not covered there before my Seloc manual arrives. I have 85 -85 hp Force And need to know if the Motor and existing bracket have to come off to install Tilt/Trim Unit I saw a post from 2/2002 which was never answered. Same question. Does the Bracket on Tilt/;Trim Unit (replace) the Force Motor bracket or slip and bolt underneath and in between the existing brackets?

Thanks

Doug

I agree with the manuel, as a last resort of course ;) , you know what they say: Real men dont need instructions. Mistakes are the best way to learn, but of course mistakes can often be costly and a manuel can prevent this. Still, you cannot ask the book a question, this site has saved quite a few people im sure!!
Craig

For Barry & Lori........After market manuals are nice and cover a large spectrum of engines. Butttttttttt.....nothing beats the manufactuers repair manual for your exact motor. Some of them are a little more pricey than others, but you get what you pay for and it sure beats paying $65-$80 an hour at a shop, if you don't have to.
...Bob in Calif...

We know you dont have anything better to do. LOL

Guys now dont throw me overboard, GUYS, splash.

I cant say Thank You enough from this newbie. No I dont have a shop manual but have been looking. Have been told my boat is too old (1970 with 1975 motor) and will be hard to find.
