Just acquired a 1988 Johnson 4hp Deluxe motor to use as a trolling motor. There is a sticker right on the cowling by the fuel connector that shows 100:1 mix ratio. Is that right? Never heard of such a high ratio.

its actually a low ratio, but remove that sticker and go with 50:1. the 100:1 ratio went wrong for omc and there was a service bulletin back in the the 80's to discontinue that fuel oil mix. ( to many came back with issues related to off season storage )

Run at 50:1
100:1 was a mistake, and OMC had to replace quite a few power heads over that issue.

Yep, I had a late '80's 25 that was a "100:1 engine" It had like 10 hours on a fresh rebuild too. OMC recalled bunches and rebuilt them for the customers. It wasn't necessarily an issue with off season storage, as it was the fact that 100:1 just isn't enough oil. The pistons will suffer greatly, in a short amount of time, as well as the other internal parts. So, anything that says 100:1 on it, ignore it.
