I have just started my boat build its an 11' 1" Glass over plywood runabout

I got the plans and frame Kit from Glen L about a year ago and have been gathering materials since then I got a lot of stuff cheap when Boaters world went out of business.( steering wheel, switches, cup holders, bilge pump, wiring, and some other stuff). I picked up 3 gallons of epoxy, 10 yards x 50" of 1300 biaxial, and 30 yards x 60" 6 oz cloth for $150 off of craigslist. I also scored 21 bd ft of Sapele for $50 on CL.

And today after a lengthy search around town for some 1/4" marine ply, I didnt want to pay $160 for shipping $240 worth of Hydrotek meranti Plywood, I found some 1/4 Okoume 1088 for , get this, $37 a sheet !!!!!!

So I started to lay out and cut the pieces today didn't get very far I had to go to lumber supply and get some saw horse brackets and 2x4s to work of of. Here I am tracing the pattern to cut out

And the first pieces cut out

Re: 11' Runabout build

well got a little bit more work done today.

this is the hull planking all cut
S6300274-1.jpg

Here is the bottom planking sanded and radiused ready to make the butt joint
S6300277-1.jpg

I have a question for you experts do you think it would be better to just glue the butt joints with some thickened epoxy or put a piece of cloth in between the bottom planking and the butt block? the plans call for just gluing them what do ya'll think will be stronger
S6300275.jpg

On a side note I had some visitors trying to take over the garage today

That'll be a cool dang boat. I would love to build a boat from scratch like that. Good luck, can't wait to see how it turns out.

I like what you are doing. Glen-L designs are sharp and proven.

Your basic choices are to improvise as you go along. I am not 100% certain of where the joints will be but if you feel you can make them stronger... go for it.

Your choice of motors will make it allot of fun (with either one) although I would opt for the larger one ;) Based on the Glen-L site it does state 25 HP max.

Keep the pictures coming!! Goose for dinner?

Re: 11' Runabout build

I think I'm really going to enjoy this thread, keep up with the postings and pics. For a couple years now I've been itching to tackle a mahogany runabout, but finances and time have prevented it. I haven't seen much in the way of 'from scratch' wood boat building threads here, and I'd love to watch yours go together.

Looks great so far!

Re: 11' Runabout build

Thanks for the link willyclay. I had already seen that thread and that is some nice work. the boat I am building Is not a traditional frame built boat it is a stitch and glue which uses minimal framing. Where are you at in charleston willy I live over in West Ashley off of 61.

Re: 11' Runabout build

Well between all the honey-dos this weekend I got a little more done on the boat.... I started prepping the joints for the butt blocks put a coat off epoxy on let it tack up and when it was still in the green stage added some thickened epoxy and glued and screwed the butt block.
this is the side planking waiting to tack up
S6300281.jpg

here is the bottom planking already glued and screwed
S6300283.jpg

started to stitch the bottom planking together
S6300284-1.jpg

just about got it stitched
S6300286.jpg

and now it almost looks like a boat kinda

Nice work, It's good to see someone else building a boat out of 'what boats are supposed to be built of' on this site :D. (Even though you are past the point of your question, I'll say that adding some glass between the bottom & the butts won't add strength.) Please keep us posted.

Hey cool project Dade...I'm glad to see that my 12' tinny restoration is not the smallest boat project on this site:D

Good luck and looking forward to seeing her get splashed:)

Re: 11' Runabout build

This is the motor board that came with the frame kit (the transom is 3/4 and the motor board is 3/4)
S6300300.jpg

I think I am going to make a full size motor board to go side to side
S6300301.jpg

It should only add 5 or 10 pounds and will make me feel better about the transom

I thought those geese looked familiar! Good move on the motor board since you intend to use the 35.

Re: 11' Runabout build

I got the new motor board cut out today. the wife has had me remodeling the guest bath with new paint and wainscoting so that has cut into my boat building time. The hull still looks the same as the last photos so no real progress to show.

Re: 11' Runabout build

Well no real progress on the hull but, here is some pics. Here is some of the stuff I have been collecting for a while I got alot of it when boaters world went out of business. I got most of it at really good prices. Surprisingly the build is coming together pretty cheaply, luckily I have gotten some good deals(epoxy, cloth, plywood, all of the below)
S6300304.jpg

S6300303.jpg

Here is a shot of the wicked cool control box I got off of ebay, its pretty old but brand new never used, it includes all the papers and they are yellowed with age It came with cables and all. I think it is going to set the interior off with the deck being mahogany strips.
S6300311.jpg

And here is a new to me tool I picked up on craigslist for $45.00 pretty good deal. The wires had been pulled out of the electrical box and the previous owner didnt want to fix it. 2 wire nuts and 5 mins it was working again.
S6300312.jpg

Well there wont be any more progress for awhile, I have to go work on another boat if you can call it a boat, gotta go make more boat building cash so off to burn rods on this beast.

Re: 11' Runabout build

I love this idea!

Awesome progress too!

Shoot me a private message when you get a chance.
I want to ask you questions about where you got the plans and costs..
Thanks.

I have considered making a small 8' speed boat.
2 seats, a 25 or 30 for fun.. Maybe a hydro foil.
