$110 Valve Stem on a Car ????

I understand that some folks like those new exotic options, but is the cost really worth the effort to know if your tires are filled to the accuracy of the sensors to drive correctly? I think I would forgo such expense and drive like I presently do. Check the tires occasionally, do normal maintenance and drive on. I honestly just don't have the need myself!

It isn't an option - all new cars have it since 2007.

Mess up? The light on the dash comes on but that is about it.

No actually it sets codes in the computers and the on board anti locking system, on the fords it will change or disable the anti lock system, I know I have had it happen on one of my wife's cars.

On my 2009 it only turns on the little light on the dash. It's been on for 6 months and it had no impact on the anti-locks.

Don't know about yours, but it did on my wife's car, of course driving here in the winter the anti lock system gets activated quite a bit, perhaps your system has not been activate, don't know, I am only talking about what happened to us.

No, more like $140 it cost me for a new sensor! A few years ago, for my fairly new 2010 Hyundai Tucson. I went to put new tires on at a local shop, & the yokels destroyed a sensor doing it  Back to the dealer to get the new sensor, & shut off the light. They look like a miniature flat plastic transistor radio, with a steel stem sticking out, and have batteries in them. Probably cheaper aftermarket, but I wasn't aware of this at the time?

Anyway, thank goodness the tire place made good on it, then I needed another one, later on also, thank goodness the dealer made good on it!

I believe TPMS is now required on all new vehicles. Something to do with maintaining proper inflation to keep up gas mileage.

Yep this is now a Gobt. mandated rule! protecting us from ourselves at our cost. Cant speak any deeper (website rules and all) but you wont find any new car w/o this "safety feature".

Big Guvmnt brought us, lower compression, unleaded gas, ethanol in gas, seat belts, head rests, emission controls, catalytic converters, leaner fuel mixtures (gas powered garden tools, love this ), expensive crash bumpers, tire pressure monitoring systems, electronic stability systems, smaller overworked engines, desert gears in the rear end, etc, etc, Thank You :mad:

And now back up cameras! Heard the other day on the news, back up cameras are going to be required on all cars in the next couple of years, what I can buy on ebay for less than $10 bucks will add at least $500 to the price of a new car!

Explorer owners who sued Ford & Firestone brought this on us.
I see tire shops advertising Nitrogen, I thought it was for the NASCAR wannabe's ;)

Whoa! That's tempting. I wonder if it would work on my Jeep. I would dearly love to disable the anti lock brakes. I hate 'em. Instead of operating my brakes the way I know they should be operated, I'm stuck with how some dweeb programmer with coke bottle glasses thinks they should operate. Unsatisfactory.

My 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a particularly annoying ABS system. About 5 years ago the ABS warning light came on, sometime in October as I remember. I decided to wait til it snowed and see what happened. It. Was. Great. The ABS was totally inoperable and I had REAL BRAKES, just like God intended. Good times. I traded the 97 for an 08 last summer so I'm back in ABS world. The newer ones operate a little differently but are no less annoying. I'd love to get rid of them but I'm reluctant to start cutting wires on my own and obviously a mechanic doesn't dare do it.

If you want to disable the ABS in a jeep then you just pull the ABS fuse

I would never disable the ABS brakes. Back when I was working for Delco Electronics, I was working on some tests at the GM proving grounds in Arizona and they had a switch in this one car we were driving to switch ABS on/off. There was no way any of us could duplicate the stopping distances with the ABS off.

Depends on what you use it for. Rock crawling - ABS kills which is why Jeep makes it so easy to disable.

Probably not going to be doing that in my 1/2 extra cab 2wd Pick Up anytime soon! :)

Oldjeep, in NY a car can't undergo the annual mandatory safety/emissions inspection if any of the dash warning lights are on. Those issues have to be repaired FIRST. Then the car can be inspected.

It just keeps getting worse. I heard on the news the other night that all new cars will be equipped with a backup camera and warning system in a few years. Federal mandate because they estimate that it will save 61 lives per year at the low cost of a few hundred bucks per car. Seriously? I thought there were already laws on the books that make it illegal to back over somebody...

In 1980 I went on a course for anti-skid brakes for tractor trailers....The dept of transportation [Canada]disallowed this system because a truck carrying 60 tonnes would stop faster than the average car....any system that is on a vehicle can be disabled safely infin you know how to do it right.....this is something I have been doing for years now.....I have done alot of training on vehicle computers

Annual safety inspections, glad we don't have those here.

And tremendously reduced emissions and increased fuel economy, greater horsepower and performance, and greatly lowered deaths per mile driven.

When anyone says they don't build 'em like they used to, I say thank God!

Oh, Arizona. Did they provide you with snow and ice to test? Between the vehicles I've owned and rental cars I've driven my impression is that I could do about as well opening the door and dragging my feet.

We were testing intelligent cruise control and radar crash avoidance that I was working on. We had to take driving courses in order to be allowed to drive on the proving grounds. It was actually an amazing place. I also got to work at the Ford proving grounds in Dearborn and the Toyota one in Japan near Mt Fuji.

GM had proving grounds in other areas of the country as well for their cold testing.
