Poured some oil into all cylinders, to try and help unfreeze them, the oil i poured into the top left cylinder came straight through the foot. the other three did not do this. What may cause that to happen????? This is a 1977 evinrude

Re: 115 head problem????

The top left cylinder is at bottom dead center, so it's exhaust port is open. Since exhaust goes out through the foot, that's where the oil went.
The heads on a carburated 2-stroke have nothing but a spark plug and a water jacket in them, and sometimes a thermostat. There is little that ever goes wrong with them, since they have no moving parts.

The exhaust port on that cylinder was opened.

What happened to sieze the motor?

You would be better off using a penitrating spray like PB Blaster for what your trying to do.

Or better yet, pull the heads for a starting point to see what your dealing with.

The reason it is siezed is that it has been sitting for 8 years

Marvel Mystery oil seems to work well for this.

pull the heads off. If you have any doubt, just look at hotrod007's thread sticky rings

This covers everything you need to know if you need to rebuild your engine. Also get the manual for your motor, it pays for itself very quickly.

How much luck do people have with their engines after unsiezing them? Do they get good results with out having to rebuild?

Now and then, depending of how rusty cylinders are. If you cant tap it loose quite easy, when tapping on piston tops, it will probably need boring and pistons.

one of them appear to be chipped off a little on the end with a rough shape to it. I wonder if it can be smoothed out a little and be ok

Yea they can be .. But from what it sounds like I think a ring got hung up, you may be missing a ring and have a damaged piston in that hole. My piston looked like this when I took it out and my ports were pretty dinged up also.

web page

Re: 115 head problem????

Got some cleaner and took a closer look at the hole it seems ok. I have been oiling the pistions for a few days now. Got some pb spray today and tried it. I tapped the pistons (pretty hard i should say) several times, re sprayed, tapped,etc.....I even pulled the fly wheel using a 3 foot cheater bar and still wont break free. I guess im gonna have to tear her down.

If you’ve never tour an out board engine down, I think your going to love the experience.

Definitely get the manual and read it first. It will walk you through it step by step.
Also, take lots of pictures as you go along. Everyone thinks they will remember where this or that part goes when they are taking it apart, but a month later things can be a little fuzzy when its time to put it back together.

Good luck and enjoy your new project. ;)
