Re: 115 head problem????

Well I decided to give it one more try. I pushed / pulled, again and again,,,It broke free, I turned the motor over several times, spraying with pb blaster then after a while i cleaned with carb cleaner then oiled the pistons again, replaced the heads same head gaskets until i feel the need to spend the money on some new ones , cleaned the carbs just with carb spray , want to see if she will run even if crappy for a while until i spend any money. It turns over real slow with the plugs in. I remove a couple of plugs it will flame out the exhaust while turning over. Put the plugs back in and turns to slow....Is it possible that i moved the timing while pulling on the fly wheel nut?????? Ideas please.

Re: 115 head problem????

you will probably get pre-igniton due to carbon that will build up in the dings, and yes you may have upset your timing, have you pulled the flywheel off? you may have sheared the key that aligns your flywheel to the crank with all the effort that went into getting the engine to turn over. Re-using old head gaskets is not a real good idea either, the metal ring that seals your head to the cylinder won't seal properly because it has already been tourqued down before, they are only designed to be fitted once. Sorry to say, but I think you are going to have to spend money on this motor if you want to be able to run it on the water safely.

I am not sure you need to have hot spot effect from the marks in pistons, unless you left marks in pistons that chopped of small chips of material or sharp holes that will keep isolated chunks of carbon. No dings or marks on pistons or heads are good though. Can you post a picture ?? Guess you left lots of oil i cylinders, that will bump your compression a lot untill you get it started. Try to spray some amount of oil/gas micture in 1:25 in it and let it cranck some rounds. Maybe it will turn easier than with all the oil then.

Re: 115 head problem????

I got her fired up today. I pulled the bowl screws out of the carbs got the brown crap out. Fired up on the second hit. Not bad for 8 years of sitting. Im gonna get a water pump kit today an put the foot back on and see what she will do in the water. I still have to put some head gaskets on also, but that is a quickie. What are the tourqe specs for the heads on this motor??? 1977 evinrude 115

If you want to keep it, i'd strongly recommend you to soak, clean and rebuild carbs. If there was crud in bowls, chance is there is something in the small iddle passages, and some that ends up in jets too. If it runs lean you will burn a piston in very short time.
