115 hp crankshaft removal

I have a 97 merc 115hp. I've disassemble my whole motor, and I cant get the crankshaft assembly out. The heart. I was told to tap at the pistons from behind with a soft end piece and hammer. The top is coming out a bit, but the bottom of the assembly doesn't want to budge. Do I need to remove the powerhead from the midsection to remove the crankshaft assembly? If not what must I do?

Re: 115 hp crankshaft removal

sdgs, I would guess you are either doing a re-build or replacing the upper and lower crankshaft seals? If I were doing this I would first have a manual. This will explain proper procedure. Without a manual, I would definitly have taken the powerhead off the midsection. The bottom of the crankshaft will not slide backwards because it is directly attached to the driveshaft. So, if you don't have a manual then go ahead and take the powerhead off and you will see the crank will be easier to remove. Good luck with the repairs

Thanks mcginleyc, I do have a manual, what I needed was more torque to remove the connector rod bolts first. Hopefully things will go well from here on.
