I am a bit new to this hobby and I need some help. I am looking all over for a used outboard motor and cant seem to find anything. Any ideas where to look? E bay seems to want to force me to travel...hard to trust craiglist. Any help?

There are different sources for different price ranges. A boat dealer will usually have some motors for sale. Normally they are not too old and several thousand dollars. A OB repair shop may have some older cheaper motors for sale.

I was lucky enough to have a boat junkyard (actiually two) near me. One of them had stuff from the '50s to the '70s, the other more current stuff. Unfortunately, the guy with the newer stuff had to go to jail for not paying the state it's sales tax, and his successor went to jail for a short time for stealing and then got foreclosed and the place was cleaned out.

So you are likely done to those two places and Craigs list and e-BAY

The place with all the old stuff is in business, but likely not applicable for you.

Don't know if you have searched Craigslist or ebay. Both have many outboards listed.

I saw a nice 115 ocean runner or ocean pro in southern NJ on craigslist...I am always looking for parts motors and i click on any listing...that motor was whiole and running..might have been $2800


the going price...i think it was a 1998

there is NOTHING wrong with craigslist....craigslist doesnt seel anything but advertising!! ha ha

its PEOPLE that are untrustworthy some times and they can be across the street, in the next town or the next state, doesnt matter what path you took to get to their door!!

I once needed a 115 hp to install on a new 21 footer. Ended up cheaper and easier to find buying a complete motor/boat/trailer kit for $ 2500. Kept the 115 motor and sold boat and trailer for $ 2000. My cost $ 500. + installation. It's another option.

i was thinking of that option but I dont want to get stuck with a boat and trailer I dont need if it doesnt sell. I have heard that its tough to get rid of a boat without a motor. But with that said it may be the way to go..thanks for your help. Im stuck right now with a 50 on a 17 footer..barely moves..

Try a web site called Govdeals. Sometimes they have outboards listed. Some sellers will arrange shipping if you are willing to pay. But shipping 200 to 400 lbs UPS would be expensive. Only nice thing about Govdeals you would be dealing with no-profit government agencies who may be likely to give you the truth about their motor!
