Hello:

1999 Johnson 115 60 degree V4: It seems that I can replace the shift shaft seals / o rings without completely disassembling the gear case and removing the prop shaft and drive shaft assemblies by unscrewing the shift shaft and removing the shift shaft and cover? Can someone please verify this?

If so I realize the shift shaft height needs to be adjusted. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to adjust it without the special tool? Thank you

yes you can,BUT be sure to count the turns of the shaft,it is screwed in place and has a very important measurement, turn it in to tighten counting the amount of turns it takes to stop, then remove, when you put it back, tighten, count out,if its too late, get the measurement from a manual or other source before busting butt trying to install with incorrect adjustment, been there, done that

the measurement is from the top deck of the lowerunit(part that mates with eng.to center of hole, use a strait edge, holding firm onto the deck and measure up,another hand helps, its usually plus minus 1/32 of an inch, but i think a bit more forgiving, depends on engine, sorry dont know the measuement

Thanks Mikesea, that was great info and it worked very well. I got the shift rod adjusted to exactly where it should be.
