I'm looking at the mercury 4 strokes in 115 and 150. I already have an old 115 evinrude(83) already on the boat and it seemed to get me up and going fine. I'm just wondering what a 150 would do for the boat. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Obviously more speed. I own the 150 4 stroke and wish I would have bought the Yamaha instead.

What kind of boat will accompany that new 115 or 150? What size boat? This information may assist the members in providing their broad knowledge and opinions. :)

More top end and probably better gas mileage as well as quieter. Hole shot between the two may be similar since you have an older 115 and may actually be closer to 100 prop hp.

Re: 115 vs 150

My question is whether your old boat is equipped to handle a big 4 stroke. If you have a mid 80's twin toon boat with 19" or 23" toons, you may not have the buoyancy to handle a heavy 4 stroke motor.

My old Starcraft 24' boat with U tubes is only rated for a 115 hp motor. I would be better suited to replace that motor with another 2 stroke due to the weight factor. 150 hp would be entirely too much power, and essentially a waste of money.

A 150 hp motor would work best on a tritoon with lifting strakes where you'd be experiencing 40 mph max speeds. That engine on a twin toon boat would do good to hit 30 mph without lifting strakes.

I agree with the above poster, if its an older toon a 115 would be a better choice especially with smaller toons. If its newer and has 24"+ diameter logs than a 150 may be worth it but you would only gain 2-3 MPH and loose people capacity due to the extra weight. A Early 80' V4 115hp rude' is right at 100hp at the shaft in good running condition. I would even look into 90hp engines, pretty much all the current ones will fit/swing a 14" diameter prop and be about the same weight as your V4 115hp.

As far as weight goes a new four stroke will weigh around 25% - 35% more. Our old 2-stroke 90 weighs 285# a new 4-stroke weighs 399#. BTW the weights are the same for the 75 - 115.

That's because the Merc 4-stroke 75, 90 and 115 are all the exact same motor, with a different program in the ECU.
That means that you can buy a 75, send the ECU to Simon Motrosports, and for $675, they can reprogram it to be a 115...or even a 125.
