I put a down payment for a 2012 Mercury 15 HP 4-stroke, you think it will be safe to put this motor on my Aluminum 12' Deep V?

I used the backyardboatbuilders pdf to figure the safe HP, I came up 20 HP. Not sure If weight will be an issue, the motor I am looking at is 135 lbs.

Similar models are rated at 10-15HP. I wont be riding with 3 people, only two of us and we are pretty light weight...LOL. What you think, should I swing it? I also beefed up the transom alot.

IT ain't a deep V by no means.
10 hp is proably the Max for that boat.

Deep V refers to the deadrise angle, which is measured at the transom of the boat. Post another picture from the rear and we can tell you if it's a Deep V, Mod V, or Flat bottom.

What you mean its not a deep v? What is it then?

Alright, thanks for the reply.

Don't want to jump into a pen with a Pit Bull, but most of those small fishing boats were "modivied" V meaning that they had a v forward that smoothed out to a flat/hard chine transom or a flat bottom at the transom with rounded chines.

Years ago friend had a 33 Johnny on a 13-14' Alumacraft with a side console just forward of the rear cross seat (as are normal in those fishing boats) and it ran out real nice.

I would imagine that the thread was as it was to distinguish it from a flat bottom john.

That looks like a pretty deep model so it's probably rated for the 15 horsepower-wise, but I am concerned about the weight.

I'd worry about weight and speed/control with one person. don't stand up!

Hopefully it's a pull-start and you don't have a battery, too.

Here is a picture I had on my computer, I can take more after work if you'd like.

I wasnt aware it was measured at transom, the deadrise angle thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Yes I'm starting to think its a Modified V soft chine. What you think?

This is what I am concerned about as well being that I have beefed up the transom quiet a bit. Would more weight near the bow help?

It will have a pull start but I plan on having a battery up front for the trolling motor. Will more weight up front help in this "back heavy" situation?

I can always go with a 9.9 if recommended.

Re: 12' Aluminum Deep V 15HP ok?

Moving the weight forward will help, however, the total weight allowance for a 12' usually isn't that great. You're going to have to make sure your 3 guys plus equipment aren't over.

Aren't 9.9s and 15s usually the same "form factor" (for lack of a better word) and thus real close in weight?

(Not helpful comment...) but this is why when my dad was looking for a tinnie, I encouraged him not to consider anything less and a 14'.

Well the 9.9 weighs 84 lbs as opposed to the 15 hp weighing in at 135. Yea I kind of rushed into the deal, i have put so much work into it that i am beginning to love it. There is always time to buy a larger boat.

Yes on "soft chine modified V" as was the Alumacraft I mentioned with a 33 on it.

In your picture it appears that the transom knee bracket is not attached to the transom. I would get it attached (thru bolts preferred) before you run the 15.
