The pinion gear grenaded in my lower unit. I got it all apart and am making a parts list. I know I need all new bearings racers, and forward gear, and pinion gear, shims and pinion nut. My question is can I use my propeller drive and my drive shaft or should I replace those or take those to a shop and have them cleaned up?

Re: 120 hp force lower unit rebuild

As long as the shafts are not damaged and the surfaces where the seals are remain in good condition, keep the shafts. Do the work yourself and save yourself over a thousand bucks in labor alone. I recently rebuilt my LU, including replacing all bearings, spacers, washers and seals for under 300 dollars. Anyone can do so if they are handy with tools, own a repair manual and have the time and energy to do the work themselves. If you are interested PM me and I can inform you how to go about finding replacement bearings and seals directly from the bearing manufactures distributors themselves.

If you can find them used, then replace the forward and pinion gears. NEW--If they are available, they will cost about 500 bucks. Then you still need to buy seals.

Do yourself a favor and just buy a GOOD used lower unit for that money.

If you do find used ones, remember that they MUST be correctly shimmed into the gearcase. They require about .005 backlash or service life will be reduced.
