Re: 120 Looper Charge coil test

Yep compression is good the mech checked it and I checked it again last week
average 115 Psi on all
Now heres the story I origionaly bought a pack because after making a spark tester I found intermiting fire so I bought a Serria pack online.I thought this surely is where Im having power Loss when I put it on I still had intermitent spark. I decided it was best for me to take to mech who would have the peak volt meter and such the book talked about. I should have saved that money and just bought my own. any way the mech said the new pack i bought was bad so he buys another CDI and puts it on and guess what no spark. So he says OK you need a timerbase. He buys OMC timerbase and got the firing right. I pick it up and it runs great just like before I rebuilt. About 5 outings later the no power problem came back it would not plane off just like before. I took it back to the mech and he check it over and could not find a thing. Run good on the hose he clamped a analog meter to the plug wire and it mached the RPM gauge and after trying it again and no power he wanted to rebuild the carbs for $200 Which I had already done when I done the rebuild. So I got it back and this is what I found after intense reasearch here on iboats
1. found recirculation hose routed wrong ( Fixed)
2. Found diaphgram busted on VRO ( Fixed)
3. Found hub magnet under wheel loose ( repositioned)
( I even borrowed a new flywheel from the mech to try and it ran the same out of the hole timing ws different but after setting it still had no power)
I even took it to anoter mech across the road and he dont like after market parts so he threw a OMC pack on and said go try that Never the less I got my CDI pack back along with my money. What ever happened to a little trouble shooting these folks just want to throw new parts and hope they get it.
Sorry for such a long story but that is it

Hmm. Seems you've been chasing ignition problems. If you can pull 5600rpms & 50mph I doubt whether it is an ignition problem. Well maybe it is your carbs if they haven't been done for quite a while. Is your link & sync set up correctly?

Re: 120 Looper Charge coil test

Hey Seasport
Yea I have went threw this pretty good. Ive pulled the carbs apart and soaked in carb soak and pulled every thing that can be pulled out and cleaned. I set the floats according to manual. I knocked out the core plugs thinking plugage in there and all clear. put new plugs in. I checked the electric primer took apart diaphgram good and no leak by. Just listining to it taking off it sounds like to much fuel you know kinda bogging sound just no ZIP.
Could my floats need adjust in a certian direction. or how about this could the needel valve orfice be to large maybe a cheap rebuild kit I got. would to much fuel give these symptoms ? I mght have already asked please forgive me Im going in circles sometimes seems like.

Re: 120 Looper Charge coil test

So let me make sure I have this right - your main problem is that you have a poor hole shot compared with the same motor and boat previously. However, with a bit of coaxing you can get the boat to 5600rpms and 50mph. So the main problem is poor performance out of the hole - right? The motor sounds like it is bogging when you take off.

Are you sure your link & sync is set up per the manual? It's important that the ignition and throttle advance are perfectly synchronised.

Are you sure you are not carrying around an extra load of water in your hull?

Is your prop OK?

I dunno - I'm running out of ideas - maybe someone else can chime in here.

Are you getting a strong spark on all cylinders now with the spark tester?

Ive went over the link & sink several times. but if you got it at WOT the timing is fully advanced and carbs wide open. would that still play a factor?
I also just rechecked the spark on a 7/16 tester and all four firing strong. Although they are not a white looking color just a dark black almost wet looking. Should they be more white looking. Maybe I need to have my prop looked at. Boat stays under shed.

By water in the boat I meant inside the hull where you can't see it. Do you have sealed buoyancy tanks or bilge which may have taken on water?

It doesn't sound as if there's much wrong with your motor. You could check out the prop, but with a badly worn prop you'd be blowing out on corners. Maybe your prop hub is slipping - but you should hear the engine revs increase with no increase in boat speed if this was the case.

Re: 120 Looper Charge coil test

Im not sure how to see if I got some water traped. Its funny you say that though because the other day when I had a friend running it while I checked the timing he saw me run it afterwords when i leaned foward and got it planed out and got it up to 50 MPH or so. He said it just seems to be running to good and brought up the water in the hull idea. I know I cant physicaly see any water back where the Bilge pump is and cant here any sloshing around. The Boat is a Basscat and by my understanding it is all fiberglass no wood any where. Im gona try flooding the inside and make sure it drains back to the bilge pump. But yeap thats exactly what it seems like. It just puzzels me to know that it did run great a few times after I had the timerbace and pack put on. I got my UGLY fin back on until I find the real problem.
Thanks

Welp no apperant water stuck in hull any where. I took her out today and she ran great whith the fin on. I guess I will leave it that way. I sure didnt think I was going to get as in depth as setting the magnetic hub but I did and it worked. I might check the timing at WOT agin just for grins and giggles. I think the repair I made on the VRO helped get it running beter. no more coughing at idle. any way thanks for all the expert advice.
