My Son-in-law Has A 2003, 125hp Merc. I've Used The Boat And Its Real Hard Starting, Once It Fires Up It Dies. After About 4 Or 5 Trys It Will Run But It Has To Warm Up A Long Time Before You Put It In Gear Or It Will Die Again, the primer bulb is tight. Once You Get It Running It Runs Fine, But If You Shut It Down For Longer Than 15 Or 20 Min, Its The Same Thing Over Again. His Mechanic Has Looked At It, And Couldn't Find Any Thing Wrong, He Says That Motor Runs On 2 Cyl. Until It Gets To 1800 Rpms, So Is It Trying To Start On 2 Cyl, And Is There Anything That Could Be Causing It To Start Hard?

Re: 125 Merc, Hard Starting

I just fixed my problem that sounds like yours, it took 10 minutes to start mine off the trailor then 5 mins after a shutdown, I just changed my fuel filter and spark plugs and with one turn of the key and about three to four revolutions it started up but I still have a problem with wide open throttle in idle so i fixed 1 of many problems.

If you've beached it you may want to check the propellor area, if anything gets lodged in there it can make for difficult starting.
