Not new to boating, got a 1957 Chris craft runabout with a Hercules model kfl inline 6. But definitely new to force. Has about a year now and I've gone through entire tune up section o the manual. I've replaced : fuel pump and diaphragm, all four coils, recirc gaskets hoses and screens, ignition switch ,rebuilt carbs, water pump, starter, removed all electrical connections wire wheeled them and recoated in solder. I recently started having problems with Cylinders 1&2 cutting out. I narrowed it to them using an inductive pickup rpm gauge. I then checked the coils and and swapped cd boxes and determined the issue was with the sator. A quick peak revealed a broken wire arcing to the flywheel. After two days of PB blaster, heat cycling and snapping grade eight 1/4 20 bolts, I retapped holes in flywheel to 7/16 20 and with a little coaxing the flywheel came off. Upon further investigation of the stator, the blue lead to the cd box had completely burned through the insulation and was barely attached to the stator. What would cause this kind of over heating of the stator, And is the flywheel safe to reuse after drilling and retapping?

Re: 125 stator burned out

The easy one first. Yes, the flywheel should still be good to go just make sure you drilled and tapped both holes with the same size to maintain balance. As for the blue wire, it's not unusual the connections becomes dirty and develops high resistance and overheat. It's not unusual either to see a wire or two becomes loose and rub against the flywheel. Hopefully there is enough wire left to solder a connection and then use heat shrink to insulate it. clean the connectors and reconnect. But before doing do make sure the resistance on both circuits is acceptable, 600~800 ohms between blue and yellow wires.
