These are low pressure pumps.2-4# is about normal.
The pump is easy/cheap to rebuild.
Always add the year and model#,serial#s.Pics are good too.Profile/location?

Not sure , my husband is computer illiterate so i am asking for him, the engine surges under power, it runs rough and he says it seems like a fuel problem. He is an auto mechanic by trade. He has replaced all the fuel lines and clamps, cleaned filters, thinks it might be the fuel pump. wants to know if it can be replaced with an electronic one. I am sorry not sure what model it is, year is around 74.

Re: 130HP Chrysler Outboard

First, the fuel pump can be replaced with an electric one, but it is NOT a good idea. There is no automatic cut-off if the engine stalls so the pump would keep on running. The pulse pressure diaphragm pumps used in these engines are very trouble free and reliable when diaphragms are replaced as a maintenance item about every two years.

FIRST--- these engines use a surface gap spark plug. They are very prone to fouling which will cause hard starting, stalling, and low speed rough running. Clean or replace them. Champion L20V, or UL18V or NGK BUHW.

As a matter of course, replace the fuel pump diaphragm and gasket --they will only cost 5 bucks. I don't remember if the 130 had one fuel pump or two. If it has two, then replace both diaphragms and gaskets. Then disassemble the carbs, clean them and set the float height with the carb inverted. The float should be level with the carb casting and the inlet needle should seal against mouth pressure with just the weight of the float pressing it.

While the carbs are off, look in the manifolds and check the reeds to see if there are any broken or missing reed petals.

Look at the FAQs sticky at the top of the forum page. read synchronizing carbs and timing. Reset the engine according to that sticky and pay careful attention to mixture on the carb low speed needles

If the engine is as early as 74, then it will have a cam and points inside the distributor. clean and set the points to .010 open at a high lobe on the cam.

Re: 130HP Chrysler Outboard

Thank you for your information, I have shown it to my husband and he thinks he knows now what the problem may be, he is going to put a fuel pump kit and carby kit through and see if that helps, will let you know how that goes. He believes it has not had this done for god knows how long, the boat sat for over five years prior to us buying it

Rebuild the fuel pump.Check the reeds while the carbs are off.
I'd try cleaning the carbs first before rebuilding.
Most times they just need cleaning.
Change ALL the hoses. From the tank to thje carb.
Install a filter betwen the carb and pump.
Wally world G 2 or G12 depending on the size of the hose.
Install a water/fuel sep filter.
Change the gear oil.Good luck.
Oh yea welcome to the site!!!
And donate to the send Jerry and Frank to AU. campain. :)

And bring your hubby back into the 21st century. He has two fingers (I hope) and can run a computer. How do you think I type? Threaten to with hold--you know what-- until he tries. As a matter of fact: Use positive reinforcement. Tell him it turns you on to see his fingers flying over the keyboard! LOL

I own a 130 Chrysler, and according to my research, this HP engine was only made in 1972 and 1973.
